Abstract
220,062. James, R. W., (Remington Typewriter Co.). May 8, 1923. Portable machines; carriage-releasing arrangements; paper-carriages; carriage-shift mechanism; locking-devices; key locks. - In machines that are adapted to be collapsed and enclosed in a carrying-case, a collapsable part of the machine automatically controls a carriage-releasing device, a carriage-centring lock, and means for holding the shift-carriage in the normal position and for releasing the shift-key lock. The Figure shows part of a portable machine comprising (1) typelevers adapted to be collapsed and expanded by means of a vertically-movable frame 99 connected by links 110 to arms 108 on a shaft 102 which can be rocked bv means of a hand-lever 104, (2) a paper-carriage 19 running on a support 4 secured to a shift frame, movable rearwards by means of a shift-key lever 35 which carries a locking-key lever 39 having a lug 42 for engaging a plate 45, (3) letter-spacing mechanism comprising a rack 49 on the paper-carriage, and cooperating fast and loose dogs 71, 53 mounted on a plate 56 which is pivoted at 57 to a rocker 60 operated by a universal bar pivoted on the shift frame, the plate 56 being provided to permit yielding of the loose dog when the carriage is returned, and (4) an enclosing-case which, after collapsing the type-levers, centring the papercarriage, and returning the shift frame to normal position, can be folded over the machine. The shaft 102 is now adapted to operate the means referred to above. For releasing the papercarriage, the shaft 102 is formed with a crank 103 connected by a link 129 to a lever having a pin 135 adapted to engage, the plate 56 carrying the dogs 53, 71. The centre-lock consists of a blade 143, pivoted to a bracket 145 on the carriage support 4, and having a stop 146 co-operating with a stop 140 on the carriage. The stop 146 is formed with a notch 149 and inclines 148, and the stop 140 is pivoted on the carriage, and engaged by a spring 142. A lug 150 on the blade 143 engages a slide 151 which is connected by a link 152 to an arm 159 on the shaft 102. When the shaft is rocked, an incline 155 on the slide raises the blade, and the stop 146 is brought into the path of the stop 140, whereupon the carriage runs or is moved by hand until the stops engage and lock the carriage against movement in either direction. The locking-key lever 39 is released by means of a finger 125 formed on a slide 122 which is connected by a link 118 to an arm 121 on the shaft 102. If the key-lever 39 is locked when the shaft rocks, the finger engages the lug 42, the key-lever being thereby released, and the shift-frame permitted to return to the normal position. The finger also prevents effective operation of the key-lever until the shaft 102 is returned to normal position. To prevent rearward movement of the shift frame when the machine has been collapsed, the shaft 102 is formed with fingers 126 adapted to engage a member of the universal bar, which, as pointed out above, is mounted on the shift frame. Specification 220,061 is referred to.
