Abstract
210,181. Bonn, E. Nov. 1, 1922. Aeroplanes; steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.-The main wings of an aeroplane are pivoted on vertical axes 7 and can be folded back during flight until their rear edges are flush against the fuselage. Each wing is folded back by means of a cable 20 which is secured at its ends to the edges of the wing and passes over pulleys 3, 5. The pulley 5 is toothed and engages a cog-wheel 6 which engages a toothed sector 15 mounted on the semi-circular shoulder of the wing, so that when the pulley 5 is rotated, the wing turns on its pivot 7 through the medium of both the cable 20 and the cog-wheel 6. At the same time the end 12 of a support 8 pivoted to the wing slides along a groove in the fuselage. The pivot 7 is slightly inclined in order that when the wing is folded back the angle or incidence is increased. The pivots 7 may be located inside the fuselage or adjacent to its sides. The wings may be introduced partly or wholly into the body, or may be folded over one another upon its upper surface. Planes and the like, construction of.-The ribs 8 of the wings diverge from the vertical pivots 7. The wings are braced by wires 10, 14. Tanks, arrangentent and disposition of.-The fuel tank 2 is arranged to run on rails 1. Rollers 4, rotated by the pulleys 5, engage its sides in order that when the wings are folded back the position of the tank 2 is automatically varied to correct the centre of gravity. Land wheels.-The landing wheels can be folded back into the body of the aeroplane during flight. Specifications 23104/08, 30344/09, and 18661/10 are referred to.
