ARCHIE BRYAN STRIKE,
ENT OFFICE.
OF QUANTIGO, VIRGINIA.
FLYING momma Application filed January 14, 1924. Serial No. 686,169.
T0411 whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, ARCHIE B. STRINE, a citizens of United States, residing at Quantico in the 'county of Prince William and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flying Machines, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to improvements in aircraft s, the'general object of the invention ingto' provide large wings above and below the fuselage, which is of small dimensions} so as to increase the wing surface and rendemit possible for the plane to take off in shoriKdistances and to land in a small field.
Another object of the invention is to so form the upper wing that the gasoline tank may be located therein.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing myinvention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a plane constructed in accordance withthis invention.
Figure 2 is a front view.
Figure 3 is a side view.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fi ure 2.
igure 5 is a section on line 55 of igure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fi re 3.
. Fi gure 7 is a view of thegasoline tank.
In these views, '1 indicates the fuselage, 2 the landing ear, 3 the propeller, 4 the rudder, 5 the e evator, 6 the stabilizer and 8 the cables for movin the rudder and elevator from a point a jacent the pilots seat in the fuselage.
In carrying out my invention I make the fuselage of small dimensions and place above the same a large wing 9 and a smaller wing 10 is placed below the fuselage, these wings9 and 10 havin the side wings 11 connected with their si es, as shown. The up per wing 9 is. made hollow and contains the gasoline tank 12 which is connected by the pipes 13 with themotor in the fuselage. This wing is braced by the central piece 14 of wood or hollow steel tubing and the other braces 15. Braces 16 connect the rear parts of the wings 9 and 10 together. The wings 9 and 10 are 10f the shape shown.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the wing surface of the plane is greatly enlar ed and by making the wings 9 and 10 hollow their interiors may be used for car ing certain parts which: are ordinariiy carried in the fuselage so that the size of the fuselage can bedecreased and thus doing away with the resistance of a large fuselage in the passage of theplane through the air. Y A plane constructed in accordancev -with this invention. permits the. lane to be easily handled and it can take 05. and land in a comparatively small space. 75
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim What I claim is An airplane comprising superposed planes, a fuselage located between the planes, each of said planes" comprising laterally projecting wing portions and a hollow central portion, forming a car in compartment of greater depth and ri or than the said wing portions.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
ARCHIE BRYAN STRINE.
