Abstract

A neck-tie or cravat is provided with indicia e.g. a table of neck-sizes to enable it to be tied with a desired relation in the position of its ends.

Description

SPECIFICATION Device for facilitating the tying of neck-ties and cravats This invention relates to a device for facilitating the tying of neck-ties and cravats. Difficulty is often experienced when tying the knot of a tie in that the ends of the tie depend to aesthetically unacceptable positions. Either the front, normally wider end, is too high thus exposing the narrower end which extends beneath the wider end or the latter reaches down to somewhere below waist level. Therefore, it is not uncommon for several attempts to be made at tying a knot before the wearer is satisfied with the result.
The present invention seeks to overcome this problem whereby satisfactory first-time tying of a knot may be achieved.
According to the invention there is provided a device for the attachment to a tie or cravat, comprising an elongate strip of textile or other suitable material having inidicia marked thereon for attachment to the tie or cravat towards the narrower end thereof, whereby after placing the tie or cravat around the neck and upon commencing to tie the knot either the wearer's hand which grasps the wider end of the tie or a mark provided on said wider end is brought opposite the indicia thus ensuring the desired relative disposition of the two ends after the knot has been made.
Preferably the elongate strip is in the form of a label which can be sewn to the rear side of the tie.
Similarly a mark may comprise a textile strip which may be sewn across the tie in a similar menner to the tag commonly applied to the rear side of the wider end but located towards said end.
In a further development of the invention the label may comprise a scale of collar measurements in imperial or metric units and may be disposed longitudinally in order to accommodate the style of knot chosen by the wearer.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1 shows a neck-tie having an elongate textile strip attached to the rear thereof towards the narrow end, and FIGURE 2 is an enlarged view of the strip shown in FIGURE 1.
The elongate strip 10 preferably comprises a rectangular label of textile material sewn to the tie 11 at the rear thereof over the central seam 12.
The label is positioned towards the narrow end of the tie; its exact location being determined by the overall length of the tie.
A marker tag 1 3 may be sewn across the tie at the rear thereof towards the wide end. This is used to give a more accurate positioning of the tie around the wearer's neck rather than simply using the hand as a marker.
The label 10 shown in FIGURE 2 shows the scales of collar sizes in inches and cenitmeters in columns 14, 1 5 headed "T" and "W" representing a traditional knot and a so-called Windsor knot.
Only one scale need be provided showing a range of sizes or instead a third scale may be included to accommodate a "half-Windsor" knot.
In an alternative embodiment the elongate strip may be integral with the tie. In other words the strip may be printed on or woven into the textile material of the tie. The mark 13 could be similarly applied.
The manner of tying the knot is as follows: The tie is placed around the neck band in the usual manner. The mark towards the wide end of the tie is then aligned with the collar size of the wearer's shirt selected on the appropriate scale on the label 10 according to the style of knot required. Once this alignment has been made the wearer completes the knot-tying operating in the usual way.
1. A neck-tie or cravat having indicia thereon towards the narrow end thereof whereby after placing the tie or cravat around the neck and upon commencing to tie the knot it can be adjusted according to the indicia to ensure the desired relative disposition of the two ends after the knot has been made.
2. A neck-tie or cravat as claimed in claim 1, wherein the inidicia is on a label attached to the rear of the neck-tie or cravat.
3. A neck-tie or cravat as claimed in claim 1, wherein the inidicia is printed on the neck-tie or cravat.
4. A neck-tie or cravat as claimed in claim 1, wherein the indicia is woven into the material of the neck-tie or cravat.
5. A neck-tie or cravat as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4 wherein the inidicia is in the form of a table of neck sizes.
6. A neck-tie or cravat as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5 wherein the indicia is in the form of a plurality of tables suited to a corresponding number of knot styles.
7. A neck-tie or cravat as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4 having a mark thereon spaced from said indicia towards the wider end to serve as a marker against the indicia.
8. A neck-tie or cravat substantially as described with reference to Figures 1 or 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
