Abstract

209,871. Parsons, O. H. Oct. 31, 1922. Wave energy, utilizing.-A wave motor comprises an anchored frame 1, Fig. 2, supporting driving shafts which are driven in one direction by rack bars. 29 connected by rods 29 to a float 4 which is guided to rise and fall between piles 2, limited lateral swinging being permitted by means of a link 7 hinged both to the frame, and the float. The upper end of the arm 7 is connected to the frame by the joint shown in Fig. 10 comprising a socket member 50 engaging the spherical end 53 of a plunger 54 the other end of which enters a flanged sleeve 55 on the arm 7. The sleeve. 55 is slotted to allow the passage, of a pin 57 on the plunger 54. Springs 59, 60 bearing against the flanges 58, 61 and pin 57 act as shock absorbers. The front which has a rounded bottom 5 and may be ballasted with sand 39 and provided with a cover 40, is provided with guard-plates 10 on each side which have rubbing engagement with buffers 3 on the piles by which excessive vibrations of the float are prevented. The racks 28 drive pinions 27, Fig. 3, which drive the mechanism through bevel gearing mounted in casings 11. In a number of casings 11 are mounted 1 transmitting-gear comprising shafts 14 carrying flywheels 16 and pulleys 17 driven by means of bevel wheels 18 which are connected by clutch mechanism to the shafts. The clutch mechanism comprises a member 18', Fig. 5, keyed to the shaft having rollers 21 engaging tapered grooves 20<1>. In place of the rollers 21 pawls 35, Fig. 8, may be provided each comprising a cylinder 35 having a stem 36 engaging a socket 37: a coiled spring 38 surrounds the stem and normally causes the cylinder 35 to be forced into the narrow end of the grooves 20<1> so that the wheels engage the shaft but on rotation of the wheels in the opposite direction slipping will be permitted. The shafts driven by the gearing are connected by belts to a shaft 33 from which power is taken.
