Abstract
209,643. Bailey, S. L. March 17, 1923. Vibration-dampers.-In shock-absorbers of the kind comprising a cylinder with a piston having expansible bands or segments which are moved radially outwards against the walls of the cylinders by wedge action to provide the required frictional resistance to the movement of the piston, the friction bands or segments are expanded under a resilient pressure which is wholly independent of the forces which cause relative movement of the piston with the cylinder. In the form which is shown in Fig. 1 as applied to the forks of a motor bicycle, the segments E of friction material are confined between two conical discs C, D compressed together adjustably by a spring F mounted on a stud in the piston-rod. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the friction segments N are confined between the cylinder and spring-pressed segmental shoes M and between upper and lower washers C<2>, D<2>.
