Abstract

722,812. Piston packing. TANCHESTER PROPERTIES, Ltd. Jan. 16, 1953 [Oct. 17, 1951], No. 24226/51. Class 122 (1). [Also in Group XXXII] A piston in an hydraulic shock-absorber comprises two axially-spaced disc-like portions 7, 8, having a gap between in which a ring 11 fits with friction against the wall of a cylindrical casing 1, one of the piston portions (8) having a smaller diameter than that of the casing 1, and having a resiliently yieldable disc valve 12 operating against its outer face. The ring 11 comprises a band of rigid material embedded in rubber. The ring 11 may also be constructed as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It may also comprise a rubber annulus in which is embedded a sinuouslyshaped resilient strip, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The ring 11 may, however, be of non-composite construction. A spring may be disposed between the piston portion 7 and the ring 11. In operation, on compression, the ring 11 rises against the piston portion 11, and permits flow round the periphery of the piston portion 8. On rebound, the ring 11 cuts off return flow around the piston portion 11, and the resilient disc valve 12 is lifted. According to the Provisional Specification, the invention is applicable to the pistons of pumps (e.g. tyre pumps).
