Abstract

209,619. Lindsay, W. Feb. 20, 1923. Refuse-consuming furnaces. - Refuse or other low-grade fuel is consumed in a furnace furnished with a helical hearth, the material being fed in at the top of the furnace, dried in the upper part of the furnace and consumed in the lower part. As shown, a spiral hearth F<2> surrounding a central flue D<2> receives the material from a hopper B through a valves B<3>. Air under pressure is forced into a tank E<2> surrounding the furnace and passes through openings E<4> through checkerwork F<1> and escapes through jets E<6> in the hearth, agitating the material and causing it to gravitate towards the bottom of the furnace. The gases pass along the spiral chamber G to the top of the furnace and down the flue D<2> to an underground flue D<3>. Relief vents are provided at D Clinkering holes A<5> are provided in the top of the furnace. The ash passes into a water-seal H. The hearth may comprise one or more spirals. In a modification, the checkerwork F<1> is omitted and the blast is controlled by a valve so that it may be directed to the top zone only for starting; also the take-off flue is at the top of the furnace. Arrangements of a battery of furnaces are also described. The air supply may be regulated to ensure complete combustion, the resulting gases being used for steam raising; or may be curtailed or replaced by steam to produce combustible gases.
