a citizen of the United States residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Blast Furnace, of which the following is a specification. i

The principal-object of my invention is to produce a blast furnace of the character described, of simpleY Jform and construction, which may be eliciently operated for producthe desire-d results. A

rlhe furnace 11 is provided with a vertically arranged chamber 12 having formed in the inner walls thereof an upper bosh 13 and a lower bosh lil, that portion of the chamber at the upper bosh and above being the reducing or carburizing zone, and that portion of the chamber at the lower bosh and below, the melting chamber. 15 designates a series of arches for supporting the ore in the furnace, the lower portion of the furnace below the arches designated at 16 being the pit or crucible to receive the melted ore, this crucible having a hearth at its lower part provided with an outlet 17 through which the melted ore may be discharged, and also an opening 18 through which the sla@` may be removed. Each of the openings 177 and 18 are formed in castings-19 and 20 respectively, which castings are formed with water jackets 21 into which water is introduced and removed through pipes 22 and 23.
Directly below the upper bosh 13 is a plurality of burners or tuyeres 25, and directly below the lower bosh 141 is a plurality of burners or tuyeres 26. Flach of these burners is surrounded by a water jacket 28 set into the walls of the furnace, each water jacket Specification of Letters Patent.

having an inlet pipe 29 and an outlet pipe 30. Fach burner has a fuel passage 32 and a fuel outlet 33, an oil or gas supply pipe 34: extending into the fuel passage.
Fach burner is provided with an extension which extends inwardly from the walls of the furnace over the outlet 33, and directly below the fuelpassage 32 in an upwardly directed air passage 37 having an airoutlet 38 directly below the fuel outlet The burners are each hollow, having a water chamber l0 which extends into the extension 85, water being supplied to such chamber by means of a pipe 41 and removed Vfrom such chamber by means of the water outlet pipe e2. rlhe air passage extends outwardly and downwardly as indicated at i3 and is provided with a peep hole let having a suitable plug 45. l 1 f These burners are preferably made elliptical in shape, the water jacket surrounding the burners being similarly shaped. In operation the chamber above the arches is filled with'ore. During the operation of the burners the melting of the ore-is carried outin the following manner. The upper burnersl or tuyeres are so regulated thatan incomplete combustion is produced in the body of the ore about the burners and above thesame thereby releasing into the body of ore in the reducing Zone carbon monoxide which reduces the ore in the upper part or reducing zone of the furnace. At the same time the lower burners 26 are arranged to produce a combustion in the body of ore in the meltinoA zone sufcient to reduce the ore to a melted state therein, the melted material falling into the pit or crucible 16 from which it may be removed through the opening 17, the slag being removed through the opening 18. rlhe extensions 35 on the burners revent the slag from clogging the mouth of the burner so that the llame from the burners may be driven well into the bodv of the ore.
lt is understood that the heat in the melting zone is controlled bv the introduction of air through the air passages 37 and that the flame may be regulated thereby into a neutralizing, oxidizing or reducing flame.
What I claim is 1. A blast furnace comprising avertically arranged chamber having a reducing and carburizing zone in the upper portion thereofand a melting zone below the reducing zone, means for incompletely burning `gaseous fuel in the chamber in the lower part of the reducing zone to furnish carbon monoxide to the ore in they reducing zone, means for completely burning gaseous fuel in the melting zone,ra crucible in the bottom of said chamber and a series of arches above said crucible.

A blast furnace comprisinga vertically arranged chamber having a reducing and carburizing zone in the upper portion thereof and a melting zone below the reducing zone, a gaseous fuel burner arranged to furnish carbon monoxide to the ore in the reducing zone, a gaseous fuell burner arranged Vto melt the ore in the melting zone, a cruzone, a gaseous fuel burner arranged to fur? nish carbon monoxide to the ore in the reducinozone, and a gaseous fuel burner arrangeidV to melt the ore in the melting zone, each of said burners having a portion extending inwardly from the Vwalls. of the furnace overhanging the fuel outlet of the burner.

A blast furnace comprising a vertically arranged chamber having a reducing and carburizing zone in the upper portion thereof and a meltingzone below the reducing zone, .a gaseous fuel burner arranged to furnish carbon monoxide to the ore in the reducing zone, a gaseous fuel -burner arranged to melt the ore in the melting zone, said chamber having two boshes formed in the Walls thereof one above each set of burners, a Crucible in the bottom of said chamber and a series of arches above said crucible.
