Abstract

A boss 10 is formed with a skirt 12 for welding to a container and a head 14 for extending through an aperture in a handle, whereby the handle is attached to the container. The boss has ears 13 to facilitate flash welding. The handle comprises a plastics strip having an aperture at each end, the apertures being key-hole shaped or tapered and having their wider ends facing towards each other. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Securing handles to containers This invention relates to securing handles to containers, particularly, although not exclusively, containers such as 22 or 5 litre cans of paint.
At the present time there are two general types of handles used for large cans of paint. The first is a wire handle which is secured to the can by being inserted and retained at each end in an aperture in a boss fixed on the outside of the can. These wire handles are very uncomfortable to use, particularly with large cans. The alternative, which is plastics handles where a plastic strip of for instance up to 1 cm wide is employed, suffers less from the drawback of discomfort for the user, but on the other hand has the disadvantage that the ends of the handles must be rivetted to the can. This means that the can is no longer fully air or liquid tight, because the rivet passes through it.
With the present invention we propose to provide a handle for a container by attaching to the outside of the container a boss formed with one end for attachment by welding to the container, and a head at the other end to extend through an aperture in the handle.
In this way, the container can be provided with a strip like handle, for instance of plastics material, but the attachment merely involves welding opposed bosses to the outside of the container, so that no perforation of the container need take place.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description which is given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the sole Figure is a diametrical sectional view of a circular boss for attachment to a container.
The boss 10 shown in the Figure is circular, though other shapes are possible. It has a main body 11 including a skirt with an out-turned lip 12 in which five projecting ears 1 3 are provided by cutting and/or bending to assist automatic flash welding to the exterior of the container. The ears can be cut through the paint on the container.
Integrally provided at the end of the main body remote from the lip 12 is a head 14, of smaller diameter than the main body, and also having an out-turned and bent over lip 1 5. This functions like the head of a rivet, being inserted through an aperture in a strip like handle. It is possible, for particularly secure fixing, to further bend over the lip 1 5 after the handle is located in place.
For ease of fixing, the handle will have a keyhole shaped or tapered aperture at each end, with the wide ends of the apertures facing towards each other. It may with advantage be of a type which cannot be removed once applied. The heads 14 of diametrically opposed bosses near the open end of a container can be inserted through the wide ends, and the shank parts of the heads will move into the narrow parts of the apertures while the container is lifted by the handle.
The invention, which extends to the bosses as such, to containers fitted with such bosses, and to containers provided with handles, and to a method of applying handles to containers, allows the use of plastics or other strip like handles without associated disadvantages.
