Abstract
In a negative ion generator of the corona discharge type, one or more sharp points of electrically conductive material are raised to a negative potential relative to earth so that corona appears at the point or points. Negative ions are thus created in the corona region and are accelerated into the surrounding air space by virtue of the electrical field set up. Some Ozone is also generated and this is undesirable. The present invention proposes the use of Activated Charcoal Cloth material as the corona discharge site or sites. By the judicious forming of the said cloth 1 the fibres of the cloth form the sharply pointed corona discharge points. It has been found that less Ozone is generated when using the Activated Charcoal as corona discharge sites than that generated when using the usual metallic needle points. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements to negative ion generators
This invention relates to Negative lon Generators of the corona discharge type. To one aquainted with the art such a device comprises essentially a high voltage D.C. generating circuit the negative polarity of which with respect to ground potential is connected throught current limiting resistors to one or more corona discharge elements. Negative ions are produced at sites on the corona discharge elements the said ions being projected into the surrounding air by virture of the high electrical field existing in the region of the corona discharge. Ozone and certain
Oxides of Nitrogen are also produced by the corona discharge action in air and the creation of these gases is undesirable.Negative lon
Generators of the corona discharge type generally employ sharpiy pointed metallic needles as corona discharge elements.
This invention consists in making the corona discharge elements of Activated Charcoal material arranged so that corona discharge actually takes place on the said Activated
Charcoal material. Activated Charcoal exhibits adsorption properties to Ozone and certain
Oxides of Nitrogen. When corona discharge occurs on this material there is a reduction in the amounts of Ozone and Oxides of Nitrogen liberated compared to the liberated using sharply pointed metallic needles as corona discharge elements. The Activated Charcoal material proposed for use in this invention is a woven Activated Charcoal cloth. Filaments forming the threads of this material are typically of about 1 3 micrometres in diameter.
The said cloth is electrically conductive. It will be apparent from later description that random filaments protruding from the edge or surface of a cut band of said cloth become corona discharge sites on the corona discharge element. The invention is more readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 2, and 3.
In Fig. 1. a cut band of the said Activated
Charcoal Cloth 1. is wrapped concentrically around a support member 2. The support member may be of metal or of insulating material. One edge of the wrapped cloth is extended beyond the end of the support member the other end of which may be threaded for mounting purposes. The whole assembly is held together by one or more sleeves 3.The sleeve or sleeves may be metallic or of insulating material such as rubber. A cross section of the arrangment is depicted in Fig. 2. Fine filaments constituting the said wrapped cloth protruding in random fashion from the cloth edges become corona discharge sites on the thus constructed corona discharge element when this is connected to a high voltage D.C.
supply of sufficient value and the said element correctly positioned on the Negative lon Generator Chassis. It is to be understood that according to the invention the support member in Fig. 1. and Fig. 2. may be of any cross sectional shape. For example it may be in part hollow or tubular.
In Fig. 3. according to the invention a corona discharge element is constructed as a band or bands of Activated Charcoal cloth 1.
held taught between support members 2.
With suitable electrical connection and positioning on the Negative ion Generator Chassis corona discharge takes place at the edge or edges of the said cloth.
The particular examples shown are understood not be restrictive in scope as Activated
Charcoal corona discharge elements.
