Abstract

The elastomeric gasket comprises a continuous soft elastomeric material body (10) having a gripping lip (11) for engaging a bodywork flange (L), a recess (12) to receive the pane (K) and a force fitting flap (13), and a slot (14) to receive a sidewall (15a) of an auxiliary frame (15) closing on the front of the glass pane. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Elastomeric Gasket for Mounting Fixed Window Glass Panes on Passenger Cars This invention relates to an elastomeric gasket for mounting fixed window glass panes on motorvehicles, in particular passenger cars.
The invention sets out to provide such a gasket which can afford, contrary to conventional gaskets, the possibility of mounting the glass pane flush with the surface of its supporting structure, the term "flush" referring herein to the absence of any substantial surface continuity breaks at the interface between said supporting structure and the glass pane. Currently used gaskets tend, in fact, to protrude significantly from both the surface of the structure and glass pane and this, in addition to affecting the appearance thereof, represents a disadvantage of an aerodynamic nature because it results in the separation of the streamlines and consequent formations of eddies.
Within the above general aim, it is possible to arrange that the gasket according to this invention materially facilitates the glass pane mounting operations, while ensuring an effective seal against air and water leakages.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided an elastomeric gasket for mounting fixed window glass panes on motor vehicles, characterized in that it comprises a continuous body of soft elastomer material having a gripping lip provided for engaging in use the abutment blade prearranged in the glass pane seat, an open seat intended to receive in use the glass pane and a force fitting free flap therein the glass pane seat being closed on the front by an auxiliary frame made of a rigid elastomer and having a channel profile, said auxiliary frame engaging, with a sidewall thereof, a seat arranged in the gasket body, and, in use, with the other of its walls, frontally the glass pane, against which it is forced by the action of said flap which wedges itself between the auxiliary frame and sidewall of the glass pane seat.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description thereof, with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a cross-section through this gasket, as mounted to retain the windshield glass pane of a passenger car.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates the continuous body of this gasket, intended to surround the glass pane K peripherally thereto. Said body, which is formed from a soft elastomer material, has a continuous gripping lip 11 for engagement with the abutment blade L prearranged in the seat A for the glass pane provided on the car body, and an open seat 12 adapted to receive the glass pane.
Moreover, the body 10 extends with a free flap 13 which delimits, together with the body 10, an open seat 14. In the seat 14, there engages the sidewall 15a of an auxiliary frame 15, formed as a continuous channel and from either an elastomeric material or rigid plastic material. The other sidewall 15b of the frame 1 5 closes the top of the seat 12 by engaging, for retention purposes, the front surface of the glass pane K.
Between the frame 1 5 and sidewall of the seat A, there is defined a peripheral opening whereinto the flap 13 is wedged to force the frame and clamp the glass pane as is clearly shown in the drawing. It may be also seen in the drawing that, in agreement with the invention objects, the front surfaces S of the car body 13a of the flap 13 and 15c of the frame 15, are aligned without breaks in their continuity; the one break being due to the protrusion a of the frame relatively to the surface of the glass pane. That continuity break, which only depends on the thickness of the wall 15b of the frame, is, however, quite limited, it being of the order of a few millimetres, and introduces no significant disturbances of an aerodynamic nature.
Of course, the effects of this invention also extend to equivalents achieving the same degree of usefulness on the basis of the same inventive concept.
Claims
