Abstract
209,192. Ros, D. de. Oct. 5, 1922. Fibres, treating.-A substitute for horse hair is obtained by coating vegetable fibres, by immersion or otherwise, with a solution of keratin with or without the addition of glue or other suitable substance and a suitable dye or pigment. The glue or the like, may be rendered insoluble in known manner by metallic salts, tannic acid, formalin or the like. In the preparation of keratin solution, animal hair. such as is obtained from tanneries, is dissolved in a heated solution of sodium sulphide in open vessels or under steam pressure, the excess of sodium salt being neutralized with soaps, fats, or oils, and the soap produced being rendered insoluble by the addition of a metallic salt such as ferrous or ferric sulphate. The keratin solution may be obtained by hydrolizing animal hair with water in a closed vessel under steam pressure of about 120 lbs.
