Description

SPECIFICATION Method and control means for controlling the emptying of a load with n charges from a mixing unit in a dosing and mixing installation The invention relates to a method of emptying a load with n charges from a mixing installation, in a dosing and mixing installation for making a mixed product, such as concrete, from a plurality of individual components, and a control means for a dosing and mixing installation, the control means comprising a charge calculator, a means for feeding in the load and a means for controlling the running of the process, for carrying out the method.
Charge mixing processes comprise the component steps of dosing, filling, mixing or otherwise processing, and emptying. When there is high output or a rapid succession of processes the processes are controlled automatically. The mixing process can generally not be influenced, because of the minimum time required or prescribed or for other reasons. Similarly, the filling step can hardly be influenced because of the required time sequence or because it is planned to give a favourable mixing action. As far as possible, large filling volumes are used to accelerate the processes. The emptying process often takes a long time, and the obvious possibility of enlarging the outlet flap or operating it more quickly is often constructionally impossible or very expensive.
The invention aims to improve a method of this type, so as to shorten the time taken to empty a whole load, without impairing the quality of the end product.
According to the present invention in one aspect there is provided a method of emptying a load comprising n charges from a mixing unit, forming part of a dosing and mixing installation for producing a mixed product such as concrete from a plurality of individual components, in which the first (n-1) charges are only partially emptied and the n-th charge is completely emptied.
According to the present invention in another aspect there is provided a control means for controlling a dosing and mixing installation to carry out the method recited above, comprising a charge calculator, a load feeding means and a process control in which for the first (n-1) charges determined by the charge calculator, the process control each time opens the emptying slide of the mixing unit for a time (4, effective for partial emptying, and for the n-th charge opens it for a time (0, effective for complete emptying.
Detailed studies of the processes involved in mixing concrete have shown that, in the emptying process, the initial outflow is very large but becomes progressively smaller towards the end. It therefore takes a very long time to empty the mixer completely. On the other hand it has also been found that residues left behind are of no disadvantage to the mixing of the next charge, and the power requirement of the motor driving the mixing installation is only slightly increased.Whereas in existing and known apparatuses the fixed emptying times for the mixing unit are chosen as a compromise between complete emptying and a short length of time, the invention is based on the idea that, when a load consists of more than one mixer charge as it does in the majority of cases, it is advantageous if only the last charge is emptied completely, taking a relatively long time, while the preceding charges are not completely emptied and have short emptying times.
In conventional concrete mixing processes up to one third of the cycle time is required to empty the mixer. If the emptying time for the preceding emptying processes is therefore made shorter than for the last emptying process, the total time is considerably reduced and the output of the installation increased.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is a diagramatic illustration of a dosing and mixing installation, Figure 2 is a diagram showing a typical working cycle for a load, and Figure 3 is a diagram showing the control means according to the invention.
The dosing and mixing installation comprises silos 7 for containing material, such as aggregate, a weighing container 8, scales 9 for weighing material in the container 8, silos 1 6 for containing cement, a screw conveyor 10, a weighing container 11 for receiving cement, scales 1 2 for weighing the cement in the container 11, a water dosing valve 14, and a mixer 1 3 provided with an emptying or discharge slide 1 7.
The fully mixed end product is emptied out of the mixer 1 3 into a transportable mixer 1 5.
The timing of a mixing job, e.g. with three individual charges with a starting-up cycle at the beginning, and the cycles for passing the material through the installation, where operation is continuous, is shown in Fig. 2. The times given are in seconds.
Fig. 3 shows the control means of the invention in diagrammatic form, and any units not significant to the invention are not illustrated. The volume of the load is predetermined or selected at the charge calculator 1, e.g. 3.6 m3 to fill a transportable mixer 1 5.
From this the calculator 1 determines the number and volume of individual charges, e.g. 3 x 1.2 m3, gives the appropriate command to a process control means 2 and receives signals via the outlet.
By controlling timing mechanisms which are set to the running times (4 and (0 respec tively, the process control means 2 opens the emptying slide 1 7 of the mixer 13, partially to empty the first (n-1) charges, and fully to empty the n-th charge.
The emptying times (4 and (0 can either be set manually or controlled automatically, using level sensors in the mixer 1 3 or through the power or current requirement of the motor driving the mixer 13, which indicates how full the mixer 1 3 is.
