Abstract

A clip for use as a size marker on a garment hanger comprises a body, especially of resilient plastics material, which has a central passage 2 allowing it to be fitted over the hook portion of a garment hanger. The passage has a cross-section which includes a funnel- shaped inlet 3 leading to two portions 4 & 6 of increased transverse dimension connected by a short passage 5. The dimensions of the portions of increased transverse dimensions are such that the clip may either be fitted onto a hanger with a metal hook or with a plastics hook. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Clip This invention relates to clips, especially clips made of plastics materials and more especially to a clip which can be used as a size marker on a garment hanger.
According to the invention there is provided a clip which may be clipped over the hook portion of a garment hanger to form a size display marker. It has hitherto not been possible with such markers to use the markers satisfactorily on both metal and plastics hooks. This invention provides a clip marker that can be used with both sorts of hooks.
According to the invention a clip for use as a size marker has a central split allowing it to be fitted over the hook portion of a garment hanger, which split has a cross-section, perpendicular to the direction of extent of the hook through the clip, which at its open end has a funnel shaped inlet leading to or forming a narrow passage, the narrow passage terminating in one edge of a chamber portion of increased transverse dimension and having a restricted outlet formed in the opposite edge to the inlet, the outlet forming a short connecting passageto a second portion of increased transverse dimension, the said second portion of increased cross-section being otherwise closed on all sides.
The provision of the funnel shaped opening to the passage means that when the clip is pressed against the shank of a hook the two sides of the clip are forced apart and the shank of the hook enters the narrow passage. On pushing the clip further the shank of the hook enters the first chamber and this may be dimensioned such that at least the two sides will grip the shank of a metal hook. Preferably however, when used on metal hooks the clip is such that it can be pushed further over the shank so that the shank of the hook passes the restricted outlet from the first chamber and enters the second chamber which is of such dimensions that it will grip the shank of the hook. Preferably, the closed rear wall of the second chamber is of part circular, especially semi-circular, section to fit closely against the shank of a metal hook of circular section. When used on a hanger with a hook of plastics material the portion of restricted width between the two chambers engages the two sides of the web of the hook and, if the hook is provided with edge flanges these fit one in each chamber.
The clip of the invention is preferably made of a resilient plastics material and is preferably produced by extrusion.
One form of clip in accordance with the invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to the drawing which is a cross-section through the clip. Referring to the drawing the clip 1 comprises an extruded section of resilient plastics material having a central split 2 extending substantially completely therethrough. The split 2, which is symmetrical about a vertical plane containing the axis of a hook on which the clip is to be used has a first funnel shaped portion 3 which narrows to a restricted width which is less than that of a conventional hanger hook. The funnel shaped portion opens into a first chamber 4 of substantially rectangular cross-section, and which opens via a restricted portion 5 into a second chamberS. The second chamber 6 which is closed, apart from the outlet 7 from the passage 5 has a substantially semi-circular rear wall 8 so that it can fairly closely co-operate with a metal hook of circular cross-section.
In vertical section the clip of the invention is preferably rectangular and for the embodiment described the vertical height is approximately 13 mm and the length is approximately 22.5 mm although these dimensions can, of course, be altered to suit any specific purpose.
CLAIMS (Filed on 13 Nov 1981) 1. A clip for use as a size marker on a garment hanger, the clip comprising a body of material having a central split allowing it to befitted over the hook portion of a garment hanger, which split has a cross-section, perpendicular to the direction of extent of the hook through the clip, which at its open end has a funnel shaped inlet leading to or forming a narrow passage, the narrow passage terminating in one edge of a chamber portion of increased transverse dimension and having a restricted outlet formed in the opposite edge to the inlet, the outlet forming a short connecting passage to a second portion of increased transverse dimension, the said second portion of increased cross-section being otherwise closed on all sides.
2. A clip according to claim 1 made from a resilient plastics material.
3. A clip according to claim 1 substantially as described herein with reference to and as shown in the drawing.
