Description
SPECIFICATION
A portable window cover assembly
This invention relates to a portable window cover assembly.
According to the present invention there is provided a portable window cover assembly comprising: a flexible integrally formed magnetized frame adapted for selective sealable mounting against a window opening; and a window cover member sealably attached to said magnetized frame so as to be co-extensive therewith, said window cover member adapted to be in covering register with a window over which said frame is mounted.
The window cover member attached to and co-extensive with the magnetized frame can selectively consist of flexible screen material, or of rigid, semi-rigid or flexible solid sheet materials such as glass, flexible clear or solar shade plastic, one-way mirror material, canvas and the like.
Associated integrally formed flexible magnetized and adhesive backed mounting strips or frames are provided for use in selectively sealably mounting the portable window cover assembly on surfaces which are not magnetically attractive such as wood, aluminium, plastic and the like.
The portable window cover assembly having a flexible integrally formed magnetized frame can be selectively sealably mounted over corresponding window or door openings of vehicles such as passenger cars, vans, trucks, recreational vehicles, mobile homes and the like. The window cover assembly can also be used on all types of boats, such as cabin cruisers and the like. The window cover assembly can also be used in connection with windows of portable and/or fixed building structures such as cabins, portable toilets, barns, ski chalets and the like. The only requirement is that the window opening to be covered must have a magnetically attractive peripheral edge surface or frame to which the magnetized frame of the window cover assembly can be attracted to so as to achieve a secure continuous sealable attachment thereto.
In operative use environments where the peripheral edge surface is not magnetically attractive, such as wood, aluminium, plastic and the like, associated integrally formed flexible magnetized and adhesive backed mounting strips or frames are provided for use in selectively mounting the portable window cover assembly thereon. Such structures would be plastic and aluminium vehicles, such as recreational vehicles, aluminium cars, trailers and the like, and portable and/or fixed building structures fabricated from wood, plastic and the like. The mounting strips or frames would be configured to match the configuration of the magnetized frame of the window cover assembly that is to be magnetically affixed in covering register with respect thereto.
By a method well known in the art the magnetic pattern of the frame of the portable window cover assembly is designed so that it is magnetically attracted to the magnetized mounting frame so as to be magnetically retained thereagainst.
None of the window cover structures of the known prior art disclose a portable window cover assembly having a flexible integrally formed onepiece unitary magnetized frame for selective continuous sealable mounting over windows of vehicle or building structures. Further, nowhere in the known prior art is there shown the use of associated integrally forming flexible magnetized and adhesive backed mounting strips or frames whereby the portable window frame assembly can be used on surfaces which are not magnetically attractive.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a portable window cover assembly having a flexible integrally formed magnetized frame for selective sealable mounting in covering register with windows of vehicles and portable or fixed building structures.
Another object of this invention is to provide a portable window cover assembly consisting of a flexible screen having a flexible integrally formed magnetized frame for selective sealable mounting in covering register with windows of vehicles and portable or fixed building structures.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a portable window cover assembly consisting of rigid, semi-rigid or flexible sheet materials, such as glass, flexible clear or solar shade plastic, canvas and the like, having a flexible integrally formed magnetized frame for selective sealable mounting in covering register with windows of vehicles and portable or fixed building structures.
Another object of this invention is to provide an associated integrally formed flexible magnetized and adhesive backed mounting frame for selective sealable mounting around a window provided through a non-magnetic surface and which is adapted to magnetically matingly engage the flexible magnetized frame of a portable window cover assembly so as to maintain the portable window cover assembly in sealed covering register with the vehicle and/or building structure window.
Another object of this invention is to provide a portable window cover assembly having a flexible integrally formed magnetized frame for selective sealable mounting in covering register with a vehicle and/or building structure window and which can be selectively removed from the window and easily rolled up when not in use to facilitate storage thereof.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the associated integrally formed adhesive-backed flexible magnetized mounting frame in position around a window provided in a non-magnetic wall surface and a portable window cover assembly according to the present invention in spaced-apart register therefrom;
Figure 6 is a schematic cross-sectional view of a window in a non-magnetic wall and showing in spaced-apart register therefrom the associated adhesive-back mounting frame and the portable window cover assembly according to the present invention.
As shown generally in the drawings, a portable window cover assembly 11 is provided consisting of a flexible integrally formed magnetized frame 12 having a flexible window cover member 13 attached thereto and co-extensive therewith. The window cover member 13 may selectively be attached to the frame 12 along the peripheral edge portions thereof by use of stitching or stapling. Further, the window cover member 13 can be selectively glued to the frame 12. or, if desired, it can be heat bonded thereto by heat bonding techniques well-known in the art. In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, the flexible window cover member 13 is a screen material which prevents insects and the like from entering a window over which it is placed while permitting ventilation air to pass therethrough into the interior of the vehicle or building structure. In another embodiment of the invention, the flexible window cover member 13 can be solar shade plastic sheet material which is well known in the art so as to prevent the sun rays and heat from entering a window over which it is mounted or it can be a one-way mirror material that is also well known in the art. It is also within the scope of the invention that the flexible window cover member 13 can consist of a canvas material, glass or a clear plastic sheet material so as to prevent rain, snow or sleet from entering the window over which it is mounted. While the portable window cover assembly described herein is generally mounted on the interior of the vehicle or building structure, it is within the scope of the invention to provide a portable window cover assembly having a solid cover member for use in preventing build-up of ice and snow on the exterior of the windows such as wind screens.
As shown in Figures 1 and 4, the portable window cover assembly 11 can be selectively mounted in a manner of seconds over a window opening provided in a vehicle door 14 without the need of ancillary connecting elements such as snaps and the like. Generally the door 14 is metallic and magnetically attractive and thus, the magnetized frame 12 of the portable window cover assembly 11 adheres thereto thereby maintaining the window cover member 13 in a completely taut sealable covering register across the window opening. In use, the door window 1 5 can be selectively opened and closed while the window cover assembly 1 1 remains in place as shown in Figure 1. When not in use, the flexible portable window cover assembly 1 1 can be almost instantaneously detached from the door 14 and rolled up for storage purposes as shown in
Figure 3.
It has been found that window in some vehicles, mobile homes and portable and/or fixed building structures do not have frames or wall surfaces contiguous therewith that are magnetically attractive. Hence, the portable window cover assembly 1 1 described heretofore cannot be utilized therewith. It has thus become necessary to provide an associated flexible magnetized mounting frame 16 having an adhesive layer 17 provided on one side thereof so as to provide for easy sealable engagement with the non-magnetic surface.
As shown in Figure 5, the associated magnetized mounting frame 16 is easily sealably affixed to the non-magnetic surface 18 around the window 19. This is easily accomplished because the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer 17 adheres to the panel 18 and thus retains the magnetized mounting frame 16 in a sealed position around the window 19. Thus positioned, the mounting frame 16 can receive the portable window cover assembly 11 thereagainst and magnetically retain it in covering register over the window 1 9.
The relative positioning of the window 19 and associated non-magnetic surface 18, the associated adhesive-backed magnetized mounting frame 16 and the portable window cover assembly 11 is shown in cross-sectional schematic exploded view in Figure 6.
In fabricating the portable window cover assembly, the flexible screen material or solid sheet material is cut to size so as to be co-extensive with the flexible integrally formed magnetized frame and is affixed thereto as previously described. In fabricating the associated adhesive backed magnetized mounting frame, it can be custom-cut to form its desired one piece integral configuration or it can be formed by elongate adhesive backed magnetized strips into the desired configuration by stitching, stapling and the like.
It is also within the scope of the invention that elongate adhesive-backed magnetized mounting strips be positioned along each side of a window located in a non-magnetic surface of a vehicle or building structure in place of the previously described magnetic frame 1 6. Thus positioned, the mounting strips can receive the portable window assembly 11 thereagainst. Further, although the magnetized frame 12 of the portable window cover assembly 11 is shown as an integrally formed unitary member, it is within the scope of the invention to be formed by use of individual elongate magnetized extruded strips mitered and connected at their ends by use of staples and/or appropriate connecting means so as to form an appropriate frame configuration as shown in the drawings.
It should be noted that the flexible magnetized frames and strips shown and described herein are well known in the art and will not be described in detail herein. Suffice to say that the material utilized generally comprises permanent magnetic particles dispersed in a flexible non-magnetic matrix. Such material is commercially available in whatever polarity and magnetic patterns are desired and in any desired extruded strip and/or sheet configuration and custom-cut parts as required.
It is thus seen that portable window cover assembly having a magnetized frame is provided having versatility in use in vehicles, such as automobiles, station wagons, recreational vehicles, boats, trucks, vans, mobile homes and the like. Further, the use of the adhesive-backed magnetized mounting frame expands the use of the portable window cover assembly to vehicles and portable and/or fixed building structures having non-magnetic surfaces with which the portable window cover assembly could not normally be used. Although the use of the portable window cover assembly has been described for use in connection with windows that open and close, it is considered to be within the scope of the invention that the portable window cover assembly can be used in connection with sealed windows such as those located in vans and boats.
In such applications the window cover per se can consist of both right and flexible plastic materials such as glass, plexiglas, solar shade, one-way mirrored film and the like.
Thus, a portable window cover assembly and the associated adhesive-backed magnetized mounting frame are provided which can be selectively used do not only provide ventilation along with protection against insects but also to provide privacy and protection against the sun's rays and the elements such as rain, snow and the like. Further, the use of the fully integrally formed magnetized frames provide complete 100% continuous sealing engagement against the surface to which they are affixed and which do not in any way damage the surface. This is not found in the devices of the prior known art.
It is thus seen that a unique portable window cover assembly is provided consisting of a flexible integrally formed magnetized frame which is adapted for selective sealable mounting against a surface defining a window opening. A window cover member is sealably attached to the magnetized frame so as to be co-extensive therewith. The window cover member is adapted to be in covering register with the window over which the frame is mounted. The window cover member can selectively consist of a flexible screen, a flexible solar shade sheet, a clear plastic sheet, a glass panel, a canvas sheet, a one-way mirror film and the like.
Another embodiment of the portable window cover assembly is provided which consists of a first flexible integrally formed magnetized mounting frame which is adapted for selective sealable mounting against a surface defining a window opening. The first mounting frame is provided with a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer provided on one side thereof so as to permit the selective sealable mounting of the mounting frame against a non-magnetic surface. A second flexible integrally formed magnetized frame is provided co-extensive with the first mounting frame. The second magnetized frame is adapted for selective magnetic sealable attached register with the first mounting frame, a window cover member is sealably attached to the second magnetized frame so as to be co-extensive therewith. The window cover member is adapted to be in covering register with the window over which the first frame is mounted. The window cover member can selectively consist of materials as previously described.
