Abstract
An insect screen for a window, comprising a mesh 13 mounted in a frame 12, has a cavity 10 sized and contoured to accommodate the handle of the window, allowing the screen to be located close to the window. The member forming the cavity, figure 1, which may be of various shapes (figure 2), has a flange 11 by which it is affixed, or made integral with the screen, by adhesive, adhesive tape or welding, or is mechanically mounted, for example by a frame (not shown) which is attached to one or both sides of the screen.
Description
WINDOW HANDLE CAVITY
This invention relates to a window handle cavity.
Virtually all windows in the UK open outwards with various methods of retaining them in the open position. This has prevented insect screens from being installed on the outside of such windows. Installing insect screens on the inside of windows is difficult to do mechanically with an installation method that is functional, protects the screen and is visually appealing, especially if the window handle protrudes back into the room when the window is closed and impinges on a screen fitted to the inside of the window frame. (Insect screens consist of a fine mesh, typically of fibreglass or metal, held taut within a rigid frame mounted across the window, thereby preventing insects from entering when the window is open).
As a result, window insect screens in the UK are virtually unknown, except in some expensive, customised commercial and institutional applications.
According to the present invention there is provided a window handle cavity which can be affixed to or integrated into a window screen to accommodate the window handle when the window is closed, thereby allowing the screen to remain fully closed on the window frame as opposed to partially open resting on the window handle. This provides a more functional screen, protects the screen structurally by holding it rigidly on the window frame in both the open and closed window modes while making the screen visually more acceptable.
The contour of the cavity can be of various lines and is shaped and sized so as to permit the opening and full closure of the insect screen without contact with the window handle at any time.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows the handle cavity in perspective viewed
from above the handle cavity;
Figure 2 illustrates in cross section some typical contour
lines that can be used for the cavity;
Figure 3 illustrates in perspective the handle cavity as
typically affixed to a screen.
Referring to Figs 1 and 2, the handle cavity consisting of the cavity itself 10 and flange 11, is typically comprised of a clear plastic, but may be comprised of any other suitable material such as metal or fibreglass, and may be clear, semi-transparent, opaque, coloured and may have holes to permit air flow. The contour of the cavity is variable and may typically be as per the four different contour crosssections shown in Fig 2. The handle cavity is mounted to the window screen as shown in Fig 3 using any suitable method such as adhesive, adhesive tape, welding, or a mechanical method such as a frame may be used held to one or both surfaces of the screen and/or handle cavity flange by adhesive, adhesive tape, welding, rivets or snaplock pins through the screen mesh 13 and cavity flange 11, or similar fastening hardware. The screen mesh is removed on the open side of the cavity as shown in Fig 3.
The size of the cavity provides room for the window handle to be accommodated within the cavity when the window handle is in the closed position. The handle cavity is typically fixed flush with the surface of the window screen and at the edge of the screen as shown in Fig 3, but may be located on any part of the screen's frame 12 and/or mesh surface 13 consistent with fulfilling its function for any particular window, window handle or screen styles.
Claims (4)
- I A window handle cavity which can be affixed to or integrated into a window screen to accommodate the window handle when the window is closed, thereby allowing the screen to remain closed on the window frame as opposed to partially open and resting on the window handle. This provides a more functional screen, protects the screen structurally by holding it rigidly on the window frame in both the open and closed window modes while making the screen visually more acceptable.The contour of the cavity can be of various lines and is shaped and sized so as to permit the opening and full closure of the insect screen without contact with the window handle at any time.
- 2 A window handle cavity affixed to or integrated into a window screen as described in Claim 1 wherein the cavity with the screen mesh removed on the open side of the cavity permits the accommodation of the window handle when the window and the screen are in the fully closed positions.
- 3 A window handle cavity as described in Claim 1 and Claim 2 wherein the handle cavity is affixed to or integrated into the screen using adhesive, adhesive tape, welding or a mechanical method such as a frame held to one or both sides of the screen and/or handle cavity by adhesive, adhesive tape, welding, rivets or snap-lock pins through the screen and cavity flange, or similar fastening hardware.
- 4 A window handle cavity substantially as described herein and with reference to Figs 1, 2, and 3 of the accompanying drawing.
