Abstract
A window frame, having an opening glazed wing or vent, has a rebate or recess, of depth 12, formed in the surfaces 10, 11 of a face of the frame, as described the face on the opposite side to the opening wing. An anti-insect screen, figure 3, is attached, preferably by hidden means, within the recess. Various contours (figure 2) and depths of recess may be used.
Description
WINDOW FRAME VENT
This invention relates to a window frame vent.
Virtually all windows in the UK open outwards with various methods of retaining them in the open position.
This has prevented insect screens from being installed on the outside of such windows. Installing insect screens on the inside of windows is difficult to do mechanically with an installation method that both protects the screen and is visually appealing. (Insect screens consist of a fine mesh, typically of fibreglass or metal, held taut within a rigid frame mounted across the window, thereby preventing insects from entering when the window is open).
As a result, window insect screens in the UK are virtually unknown, except in some expensive, customised commercial and institutional applications.
According to the present invention there is provided a window frame within which the opening portion, (commonly called a vent within the trade), is surrounded by a recess in the window frame to accommodate the insertion of an insect screen. The function of the recess is to provide for the mechanical integration of the screen into the profile of the window frame. This protects the screen, while making the screen visually more acceptable by providing a smooth profile with the window frame, and hiding the method of screen attachment, as compared to a screen that could be mounted directly on top of and raised up from the window frame in some fashion for example.
The contour of the recess can be of various lines and is shaped and sized so as to permit the insertion, removal, opening and closure of the insect screen.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective viewed from above the
vent with the recess within the window frame;
Figure 2 illustrates in cross section some typical
contour lines that can be used for the recess;
Figure 3 illustrates in perspective the window frame
and vent with an insect screen inserted into
the recess.
Referring to the drawing Figs 1 and 2, the recess is comprised of the outer surface 10 (the window frame surface itself), the inner surface of the recess 11, and the recess depth 12. The contour of the recess is variable and may typically be as per the three different contour cross-sections shown in Fig 2. The insect screen is mounted within the recess as shown in Fig 3 using suitable hardware. The size of the recess relative to the insect screen provides adequate room for fingers of the hand to install, remove, open and close the insect screen. The insect screen is typically inserted flush with the surface of the window frame, but may be inserted to any depth as afforded by the specific depth of the recess contour.
Claims (4)
1 A window frame within which the opening portion, (commonly called a vent within the trade), is surrounded by a recess in the window frame to accommodate the insertion of an insect screen.
2 A window frame with a recess as described in
Claim 1 wherein the recess permits the insertion of an insect screen within the recess to a depth determined by the depth of the recess.
3 A window frame with a recess as described in
Claim 1 and Claim 2 wherein the recess permits the mounting of securing and opening and closure devices for an insect screen inserted into the recess.
4 A window frame with a recess substantially as described herein with reference to Figs 1,2, and 3 of the accompanying drawing.
