Abstract
Fabrics, yarns, &c. are water-proofed by impregnation with a compound of a higher organic acid (e.g. the fatty, oleic, linoleic, linolenic and chaulmoogric series) and a rare-earth metal such as cerium, lanthanum and didymium, or thorium, zinconium or uranium, especially soaps only slightly soluble in hydrocarbons. The impregnation may be effected by (1) simple impregnation by a solution of the compound; (2) interaction of solutions of an alkaline fatty acid salt and a rare-earth metal salt; (3) depositing an insoluble inorganic rare-earth metal compound and then impregnating with a fatty acid compound of a rare-earth metal, or with a solution of an inorganic salt of a rare-earth metal. The comparative inertness to alkalis of the above compounds renders them suitable for use as mordants or to form lakes.
