Abstract

208,063. Drake, W. H. March 12, 1923. Moulding pulp.-Relates to the process of moulding articles from pulp wherein pulp carrying liquid is introduced into the mould to deposit the fibres on the walls of the mould, the flow of liquid being checked after the mould is filled to a predetermined degree and the pressure in the mould increased by introducing an anhydrous fluid under pressure; and consists in causing the pressure fluid, by the use of a tapered inlet to the mould, to act as a jet or current and flow through the pulp carrying liquid entirely across the mould. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described but not claimed. As shown in Fig. 6, pulp carrying liquid flows from a tank 22 through a valve 25 into a reservoir 24 terminating in a restriction 41 leading to the mould 10. After the pulp has been deposited to such an extent as to retard the flow, the valve 25 is closed and a valve 29 is opened, admitting air or superheated steam under sufficient pressure to cause a current across the mould. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus. The mould 10 comprises side sections carried by levers 11 movable through slits 14 by pins 13 on a wing 12 operated through levers 16, 15 by cam mechanism 17; and a movable bottom 18 controlled .from the member 17 through a link 20 and lever 19. The valves 25, 29 are controlled from the member 17 through levers and links 27. 31 respectively. The pressure within the mould is released, immediately before opening, by a venting piston 34 operated from the member 17 through a lever 40.
