Description
Pulverized brick material, and the use thereof in a method for explosion blasting The present invention relates to a pulverized brick or tile material, and to the use of such a material in a method for explosion blasting.
Explosives known at the present day act by virtue of the very high pressures which are generated upon deterioration. A disadvantage of the known explosives is that these pressures are achieved in a very short time, and therefore the explosion is accompanied by unpleasant secondary phenomena, more particularly by locally high air pressure variations and a loud detonation.
The present invention has its object to provide a material which has in itself, when appropriately used, the possibility of producing an explosive effect on a slowertime-scale than conventional explosives, by undergoing an expansion which remains even when there is a return to normal conditions, in contrast for example to the expansion characteristics of materials which exhibit a reversible expansion directly dependent upon expansion coefficient and temperature.
In accordance with this invention therefore we provide a pulverized brick or tile material, characterised by an elemental composition, in % by weight, which is within the ranges:
Such a pulverized brick or tile material can be used as an explosive which does not cause the unpleasant side effects of sudden pressure increases and loud detonations. According to this invention explosive blasting may be achieved by mixing the pulverized material with from 20 to 50 % by weight of water and introducing the mixture into at least one opening in the object or material in which the explosion is to occur. When this is done, a slow exploding and destroying action occurs, typically within 30 min. to about 70 h. depending on ambient temperature or filling temperature.
Expansion pressures of over 3000 t/m may be produced by the explosive blasting method of this invention.
Tests have shown that it is advantageous to select the following two elemental compositions of brick material:
Another possibility is to have the following composition of brick material:
A brick material of the following composition has also been found to give good results:
Awater addition of between 25 and 40% by weight can be particularly advantageous and produce appropriate expansion pressures.
"Explosive blasting" in the present context is to be understood as also including detaching, splitting, tearing or rupturing, deforming, separating by pressure, destroying, loosening and the like. The present invention is particularly useful for the explosion blasting of rock masses.
Brick or tile material having compositions within the ranges required by this invention are known. For example such bricks may be prepared in accordance with United States Patent No. 3785844, incorporated herein by reference. The brick or tile material of the desired composition may be pulverized by any suitable method eg it may be crushed in a mill. Optimum results are achieved when the particle sizes of the pulverized brick material are similar to those of cement powder.
