Abstract

A vehicle fascia (10) is disclosed which includes an instrument binnacle (12) towards one end of the fascia and at least one storage compartment (13,14) extending from the binnacle towards the other end of the fascia, the storage compartment being defined between upper and lower walls of the fascia. In order to provide full access to the compartment, a part of the upper wall is hinged adjacent the forward edge of the wall to form an upwardly pivotable lid (17 or 18). The compartment may be divided by a wall or walls (15) into two or more parts with respective pivotable lids (17,18) <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to vehicle fascias This invention relates to vehicle fascias.
The invention provides a vehicle fascia for extending across a vehicle interior, the fascia having an upper wall for extending along the lower edge of the vehicle windscreen, a lower wall to form a hollow structure with the upper wall and an instrument binnacle located towards one end of the fascia to be disposed in front of the driver, the upper wall of the fascia having one part or parts hinged about an axis or axes adjacent to the forward edge of the wall to pivot upwardly to provide access into the interior of the fascia.
The following is a description of some specific embodiments of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the invention; and Figures 2 & 3 are similar views to Figure 1 but showing parts of the invention in different positions.
A vehicle fascia 10 is located rearwardly of a windscreen 11 and in front of the driver's and passenger's seats and extends the width of the vehicle interior. The end of the fascia opposite the driver's seat comprises a hooded instrument panel or binnacle 12 carrying one or more instruments and/or switches (not shown). Extending between the side of the instrument housing and the opposite side of the vehicle are two storage compartments 13, 14 in contiguous relationship but separated by a longitudinal extending vertical wall 15.
The first compartment 13 is shallower and smaller than the second compartment 14 and includes a wedge section shallow recess 16 formed in the flat base of the compartment 13 for the storage of small items, as for example coins. Each storage compartment has a cover 17, 18 respectively hinged adjacent the forward edges thereof to fixed panels 19 forming the forward part of the fascia. The covers 17, may be of moulded plastics having an outer suitably textured non-reflective surface or the outer surface may be padded and covered by trim material having similar non-reflective properties. In the lower position the covers 17, 18 comprise a substantial part of the upper surface of the fascia and are therefore of suitable shape and finish to conform with the overall design of the fascia, which includes the provision of a relatively narrow vertical gap of approximately 2 inches between the underside of the rear edge of each cover and the top of a transversely extending rail 20, comprising part of the rear walls of the compartments 13, 14to provide limited access to either or both compartments. An open shelf 21 having a shallow rear wall portion 22 is spaced below the facia and extends transversely of the vehicle.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3 to provide greater access to the storage compartments, cover 17 and/or cover 18 can be swung upwardly about the hinges and held in this open position by the provision of suitable hold-open devices (not shown) which may comprise an over-centre or a simple stay arrangement. As in Figure 2, the cover 17 for the first storage compartment only is lifted and thus provides inter alia an additional shelf on which may be placed for example a drink container for which a suitable recess 23 for locating the base of the container may be provided in the base of the compartment.
Various modifications can be made to the embodiment described hereinbefore without department from the scope of the claims of the invention. For example, covers 17, 18 may be secured against unauthorised entry to the compartments by providing a mutual locking arrangement which can be located on the vertical wall 14. Additionally, the access gap between the covers 17, 18 and the top rail 22 may be covered by the provision of dependent wall along the rear edges of the covers, these walls may be rigid with the cover or hinged thereto to provide narrow pivotable flaps which still permit limited access to the compartments, in each case suitable locking means may be provided.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated is applicable to a left hand drive vehicle but it will be readily appreciated that the invention applies equally to a right hand drive vehicle, the arrangement illustrated simply being reversed.

2. A vehicle fascia as claimed in claim 1 wherein the fascia is formed internally with one or more storage compartments beneath the hinged part or parts of the upper wall.
3. A vehicle fascia as claimed in claim 2 wherein a gap is provided between the hinged part or parts of the upper wall of the fascia and the lower wall of the fascia to provide restrictive access to the compartment or compartments within the fascia without lifting the upper wall part or parts.
4. A vehicle fascia as claimed in any of the preceeding claims wherein the upper wall of the fascia is provided with two side by side hinged parts, two compartments are provided within the fascia below the respective hinged upper parts and a vertical partition is provided in the lower part of the fascia between the two compartments to separate the compartments, the partition extending upwardly to the hinger upper wall parts of the fascia when the latter are in their down positions.
5. A vehicle fascia as claimed in claim 4wherein means are provided for locking the hinger upper wall part or parts in the down position.
6. A vehicle fascia as claimed in claim 5 and in the case where two compartments are provided separated by a partition, wherein the locking means
