Rackets. - Strings for tennis and like rackets formed of silk or other fibrous material are stretched before being strung for use, and are coated with spar varnish or other waterproofing composition either before or after stringing. In, stretching the strings they are subjected to a tension which approximates to that under which they are to be used, and are then held under tension until they are strung. They are preferably stretched while in a damp condition, so that in the event of their becoming damp while in use, no further stretching will take place. The strings may be of plain twisted fibre or may have a twisted centre enclosed in a braided sheath. Tennis rackets may be waterproofed after string- ing by dipping the head of the racket, with the result that the strings are cemented together where they cross and the holes in the frame are filled with waterproofing composition.
