Abstract

207,718. Hayes, F. B. Jan. 1, 1923. Sluice valves; wedging or jamming; inspection covers; spindles; temperature, regulating.-A sluice valve suitable for connecting either the top or the bottom of a water-gas producer to a carburettor comprises a flat casing containing a pivoted sector-shaped member which may be turned so as to close either of two throughways. The valve casing F is an irregular octagon, one side of which is closed by a flanged cover plate 26 which provides a bearing for a transverse rocking shaft 28 which carries the valve 19. An inlet port 29 on the generator side registers with an outlet port 30 on the carburettor side, and smaller ports 31, 32 are similarly arranged. The distance between the two side walls of the casing is only sufficient to accommodate the thin valve plate 19, and some of the operating parts. The valve member consists of a disc 35, provided on each of its faces with a bearing ring 36. The smaller end 38 of the valve member is provided with a rectangular opening 40, and the rocking shaft 28 is provided with a correspondingly shaped lug 42. A gastight closure between the valve and its seating is effected by the device shown in Fig. 11. A hollow member 50 is secured to one of the walls 47 of the casing, and a bolt 55 projects through the opening 49 against the valve member 35. The bolt is pressed by a spring 59, the tension of which is adjusted by a screw 48. The bearing surface 61 on the valve is slightly inclined. A pair of such bolts 55 is provided for each of the two valve ports to be controlled. The valve is operated by a rod M attached to a lever arm L carrying a balance weight W. The valve casing may have a hand hole 25 at the top and a pivoted closure plate 70 at the bottom. When the lower opening 31 is closed by the valve, and the opening is open for the blast period of the producer, the slight clearance between the side of the casing and the valve allows cold air from the lower passage to pass upwards over the valve to the upper passage, thus cooling it, as indicated by the arrow Z, Fig. 14.
