Abstract

Apparatus for continuous liquid treatment of a length of textile material has a perforated cylinder (6) filled with liquid (2') under pressure. A screen belt (7) passes around almost the whole periphery of the perforated cylinder. The length of material (12) to be treated passes over an input roller (8) and is squeezed between the belt (7) and cylinder (6) while liquid is forced through it. The material passes out of the apparatus by way of an output roller (9). Particles of dirt caught on the screen belt are washed from it by the expressed liquid falling on to and through the return run of the belt between rollers (10) and (11). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for continuous treatment of a length of textile material This invention relates to an apparatus for continuous treatment of a length of textile material with a liquid which is collected in a container.
In German Specification No. 2,738,998 there is disclosed an apparatus for continuous hot treatment of a length of textile material with a hot liquid, in which the material is pressed between the jacket of a rotating cylinder and an endless backcloth which is impermeable to air, and in which the part of the cylinder which is covered by the backcloth is at least partially immersed in liquid in a trough when the apparatus is in operation. The cylinder is in the form of a closed drum with a jacket having apertures for the passage of liquid. The interior of the cylinder is connected to a pump, and means are provided for heating the moisture surrounding the cylinder. The necessary smoothing of the length of material is achieved by the suction of the pump, which causes the pressure inside the cylinder to be lower than that outside the cylinder.The length of material to be treated is thus pressed both as a result of the pressure difference between the outside and inside of the cylinder and by the impermeability of the backcloth.
For clean treatment of a length of material, however, this apparatus has the disadvantage that the material and the backcloth cannot be cleaned to remove fibres and dirt, firstly because the cylinder and backcloth are below the liquid level and secondly because of the impermeability of the backcloth. Constant or continuous cleaning of the length of material and the jacket of the cylinder is in any case impossible because particles of dirt, which are carried along with the liquid which is forced or sucked through the cylinder jacket into the interior of the cylinder as the material is pressed fiat against the cylinder, tend to get caught in the surface of the cylinder and block it.
Frequent and time consuming cleaning of the cylinder jacket is therefore necessary, which requires operation of the apparatus to be stopped.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide an apparatus which is so designed that "the cylinder, a length of material and a screen belt moving with it can be constantly and continuously kept free from fibres, dirt and other deposits while -the apparatus is in operation, with the material being pressed by it. In addition, the liquid should have a rinsing effect on the screen belt. Rapid soiling and blocking of the individual components such as has hitherto occurred in the known suction apparatus should be avoided.
According to this invention there is provided apparatus for continuous treatment of a length of textile material with a liquid collected in a container, the material being pressed between a liquid permeable and rotatable cylinder and an endless rotatable screen belt about the cylinder, wherein the cylinder over which the belt extends and the belt are situated above the level of the liquid in the container, the cylinder being filled with liquid at a pressure higher than the pressure outside the cylinder, and the liquid being forced under pressure through the wall of the cylinder so as to pass through the textile material, and thence to pass through the screen belt to the container.
An advantage of the invention is that due to the fact that the cylinder and the screen belt which is carried with it and guided over rollers are situated above the liquid level and the cylinder is supplied with liquid under pressure, the length of material is continuously cleaned by being subjected to a constant rinsing action under pressure from the liquid which is forced under pressure through the jacket of the cylinder and through the length of material. The pressure of the liquid from the jacket of the cylinder forces impurities (fibres, dirt and so on) out of the material. The continuous cleaning action is not restricted to the length of material but is also exerted on the screen belt.The liquid, which under the surface pressure produced is forced out of the cylinder through the cylinder jacket, through the screen belt surrounding it, and through the length of material between the jacket and the belt, falls onto the screen belt moving above the liquid level and below the cylinder. Any residue of impurities in the screen belt is rinsed away after the belt has been wiped by the wipers situated on the upper and/or under surface of the return run of the screen belt, and this residue is collected with the liquid in the container below the belt, and can be discharged from the container through a pipe to a filter.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the drawing, the single Figure of which is a schematic section.
Referring to the drawing, a container 1 has washing liquor 2 in its lower part. Above the liquid level 3 is a pressure washing cylinder 6 having a liquid permeable jacket 5 and rotatable about a shaft 4. A screen belt 7 is stretched over the jacket 5 of the cylinder 6 to cover it over the greatest possible angle a. The screen belt 7 is carried above the cylinder 6 over input and output rollers 8, 9 which are close together and at a tangent to the jacket. Below the level of the cylinder 6 the screen belt 7 is carried over two deflecting rollers 10, 11 situated above the liquid level 3. A length of material 1 2 delivered for treatment from a cloth beam (not shown) is passed over the input roller 8 to the cylinder 6 where it is passed between the jacket 5 and the belt 7 so as to be pressed against the jacket 5 of the cylinder 6 over the angle a.
When the liquid has been pressed out and cleaning effected, the cloth 12 leaves the apparatus by way of the output roller 9, to be wound on a cloth beam (not shown).
Partly due to the pressure and partly due to the centrifugal force on the jacket 5, liquid 2' which is under pressure inside the cylinder 6 is forced out of the cylinder 6 through the jacket 5 and also through the cloth 12 and screen belt 7. Any particles of dirt in or on the cloth 12 are washed out and removed. Impurities adhering to the apertures 7' of the belt 7 are detached by wipers 13, 14 arranged on the upper and/or under side of the returning part of the belt 7. The liquid 2' dripping from the cylinder 6 and from the part of the belt 7 wrapped round the cylinder first reaches that part of the belt 7 below the cylinder, so that the belt is rinsed and cleaned, and the liquid is then collected in the container 1. The liquid 2 is discharged into an outflow 1 5 inside the container 1 for delivery to a filter installation (not shown) where it is freed from the dirt washed out of the material 12, and is then ready to be returned to the apparatus.

Claims (6)

1. Apparatus for continuous treatment of a length of textile material with a liquid collected in a container, the material being pressed between a liquid permeable and rotatable cylinder and an endless rotatable screen belt about the cylinder, wherein the cylinder over which the belt extends and the belt are situated above the level of the liquid in the container, the cylinder being filled with liquid at a pressure higher than the pressure outside the cylinder, and the liquid being forced under pressure through the wall of the cylinder so as to pass through the wall of the cylinder so as to pass through the textile material, and thenee to pass through the screen belt to the container.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the liquid discharged from the cylinder, the material, and the screen belt about the cylinder falls onto a portion of the screen belt which is supported by rollers above the liquid level but below the cylinder, the liquid passing through the said screen belt portion to fall into the container.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein at least one wiper engages each side of a return portion of the screen belt.
4. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the cylinder, screen belt, and rollers are arranged inside the container.
5. Apparatus according to any preceding claim wherein input and output rollers are mounted above the cylinder in such positions that the screen belt and the length of material are wrapped around the cylinder over the major part of the periphery thereof.
6. Apparatus for continuous treatment of a length of textile material, the apparatus being constructed and arranged substantially as herein described and shown in the drawing.
