A composition for removing paint &c. and cleaning the surface treated comprises caustic alkali, calcium carbide, sodium chloride and water. The composition is made by dissolving 48 parts of caustic alkali and 8 parts of sodium chloride in water, and gradually adding 16 parts of calcium carbide.
