Abstract

A sheet-form packing member 5 for an air filter 1 includes two seals 6, 7 secured to one side of the sheet for sealing inlet and outlet openings 2, 3 respectively of the filter, and has end portions 9 which can be frangibly secured together. The sheet may be of cardboard or plastics foil and the seals 6, 7 may be removable therefrom after use to seal the openings 2, 3. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Filter for respiratory gas This invention relates to a filter for respiratory gas.
It is known to seal the inlet and outlet openings of respiratory gas filters by sealing piugs, covers or the like. It is also known to interconnect the sealing elements for the inlet and outlet openings by a cord or band. This ensures that, when opened, both the inlet opening and the outlet opening are opened.
A known respiratory filter (disclosed in German Utility Model 1 8 39 779) has its air inlet opening sealed by a plug cap and its air outlet opening, which here has a threaded connecting piece, sealed by a screw cap. Both sealing elements are formed of a flexible material such as, more particularly, a plastics material, and are interconnected in an integral manner by a connecting cord. The seals and the connecting cord thereby form a common molded part. There is here the disadvantage of the screw cap plug being screwed on and, subsequent to this, of the air inlet opening additionally being sealed.
Moreover, in addition to this, the respiratory filter must be packed.
A known protective respiratory apparatus with a filter (disclosed in German Patent Specification 10 63 464) has seals covering the mouthpiece and also the air inlet and the air outlet openings, the seals being interconnected by a connecting element, which comprises a band. The seals for the suction opening, the outlet connection and the mouthpiece are mounted on this band. The band is clamped around the protective filter respiratory apparatus, thereby ensuring that the seals fit tightly. The band is provided with an opening device arranged in such a way that in the first instance the seals of the air inlet opening and of the mouthpiece are removed. The band has arrow markings indicating the direction for opening.
Although the protective filter respiratory apparatus is sealed, it is not protected from mechanical stressing during transportation, and therefore requires additional packing.
According to the present invention there is provided, in combination, a filter for respiratory gas which includes an inlet opening and an outlet opening, and a sheet-lForm packing member which encloses the filter, includes two seals which seal the inlet and outlet openings, is at least as wide as the filter, and has two end portions which are frangibly secured together to enable the sheetform packing member and the seals to be removed from the filter.
The sheet-form packing member with the seals enables the filter to be packed and its openings sealed in one operation. The filter can be unpacked in one operation and can safely be made immediately ready for use as a result of the simultaneous opening of the air inlet and air outlet openings. The two seals are removed by the unpacking operation.
Preferably the filter is of circular cross-section and the sheet-form packing member has a width which is greater than or equal to the diameter of the circular cross-section having the largest diameter.
The inlet opening and the outlet opening can be provided at opposite ends of the filter and can be coaxial with a central body of the filter.
The sheet form packing member can be formed from a cardboard or plastics foil.
The two end portions are preferably connected along a seam which, when broken, enables the sheet-form packing member and seals to be removed from the filter.
The seal for the inlet and/or outlet opening may comprise a sealing plug.
After the sheet-form packing member has been removed from the filter, the seals conveniently are such that they can be removed from the sheetform packing member and used to seal the inlet and outlet openings.
The present invention also provides a sheetform packing member, for enclosing and packing a filter, the sheet-form packing member including two seals secured to one side thereof for sealing an inlet opening and an outlet opening of a filter and also including two end portions which can be frangibly secured together.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of a respiratory filter and a sheet-form packing member, partially in section; Figure 2 shows a side view of the sheet-form packing member; and Figure 3 shows a top view of the filter and sheet-form packing member shown in Figure 1.
A filter 1 for respiratory gas, in this case, has an air inlet opening 2 and an air outlet opening 3 which, here, are arranged centrally and coaxially relative to a central body of the filter 1. The filter 1 is of circular cross-section and the air outlet opening is threaded.
A sheet-form packing member or strip 5 is of rectangular shape and has a width which corresponds to the maximum outside diameter of the filter 1. The packing member 5 is formed from a suitable material, such as cardboard, plastics foil or another material. A sealing plug 6 for the air inlet opening 2 and a seal 7 for the air outlet opening 3 are mounted on the packing member 5 at suitable locations, as shown in Figure 2. For sealing and packing purposes the packing member 5 is wrapped tightly around the respiratory filter 1, so that sealing plug 6 and the seal 7 seal the corresponding air inlet and outlet openings 2 and 3 of the filter 1. Two end portions 8 and 9 of the packing membor 5 are then interconnected by a connecting seam 10 (represented by a broken line) by, for example, welding, cementing or sewing. The connecting seam 10 produces at the same time the seal. The end portions 8 and 9 of the packing member 5 can then only be separated by being destroyed.
The sealing plug 6 and the seal 7, after being separated from the packing member, can be used directly as filter seals to seal the openings 2 and 3.
In this specification, it should be appreciated that the term "encloses" is not limited to meaning "closes in on all sides". The term "encloses" may mean "encircle", so that one or more sides of the encircled object may be left open.
