Abstract
207,196. Farbenfabriken vorm. F. Bayer & Co. Nov. 20, 1922, [Convention date]. Sulphur.- Hydrogen sulphide is removed from gases and sulphur produced by passing the gases together with air, sulphur dioxide, or both through porous silicic acid (activated silica gel). When saturated with sulphur the silicic acid is extracted with sodium sulphide solution or an organic sulphur solvent such as carbon disulphide, mono- or dichlorbonzene or tetrahydronaphthalene, and the sulphur recovered by crystallization. The reaction is facilitated, when the gas contains only a small quantity of hydrogen sulphide, by the addition of a base such as ammonia or an amine. In one example a mixture of hydrogen sulphide and air is passed through a layer of porous silicic acid when liquid sulphur flows from the reaction apparatus. In a second example generator gas containing 3 grains of hydrogen sulphide per cubic metre is mixed with 1 per cent by volume of air and 0.01 gram of ammonia per cubic metre and the mixture passed through a layer of porous silictic acid. The sulphur which is precipitated in the silicic acid is extracted by means of hot chlorbenzene, and the silicic acid is freed from solvent by means of steam. In a third example a mixture of nitrogen, sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphur dioxide is passed over porous silicic acid. Sulphur accumulates in the latter and is extracted as described in the second example. Specification 146,141 is referred to.
