Abstract

207,145. Cole, G. W. Nov. 20, 1922, [Convention date]. Yarns, treating with liquids.-Silk is weighted before it is woven and dyed, and before the throwing or twisting operation, in order to incorporate the maximum quantity of weighting material such as tin salt. Undved woven silk goods may thus be produced which may be kept' in stock until the condition of the market determines the particular colour which should be used in dyeing the goods. According to the process, silk skeins in a raw state and containing gum, are treated for 1 to 1¢ hours in a bath containing soft water, soap, and sal soda, to remove all foreign matters other than gum, washed twice with soft water, treated with muriatic acid diluted with spring water to remove soap and to render the silk receptive to the tin salt, dried in an extractor, then impregnated by a series of operations comprising immersion in a bath of tin tetrachloride, 28‹ Be., for 1 hour extracted and washed with cold water and again extracted, immersed for one hour in sodium phosphate bath, 4‹-5‹ Be., washed twice with soft water, then treated with muriatic acid diluted with spring water, washed and extracted. The above tin weighting operation may be repeated 1-5 times, according to the weighting required, and after weighting the silk is washed with water, extracted, immersed in a bath of sodium phosphate for one hour, washed three times with a solution of sal soda, then for one hour in a bath of sodium silicate, 4‹-5‹ Be., then in three soft wafer baths, followed by treatment for half an hour in a bath containing soda and ammonia, and then for 1¢ hours in a bath containing green olive oil soap, and ammonia. It is then washed with spring water and muriatic acid, extracted and dried. The silk is next thrown or twisted, and for this purpose may be softened in a bath containing water. glycerine, neat's foot oil, and soap. After twisting, it may be woven and dyed.
