Abstract

A tape, with or without the incorporation of fertiliser and bird and insect repellant, has, at spaced intervals, vegetable or flower seeds. The seeds may produce designs by colour variations.

Description

SPECIFICATION Seedtape Under existing conditions the sowing of seeds separately and evenly is a slow and tedious operation, and on that account they are usually sown too thickly. Many gardeners still hold to the old concept of 'one for the birds, one to grow and one to die. However in the light of modern germination standards and the available chemical protection this thinking can only be an excuse for a job badly done.
The result of the present comparatively random sowing is the necessity to 'thin out' the crop at a later date. This wasteful pattern of procedure can be avoided by approaching the whole business of seed sowing in a new way.
As the title implies, SEEDTAPE brings seed to the customer in tape form, wound on a reel in the style of a typewriter ribbon. These seeds are evenly spaced and the material of the tape itself can incorporate a fertiliser and bird and insect repellant. Having made the customary shallow trench, the seedtape is then run along the depression, unwinding from it's spool and the soil can be closed over with the other hand at the same time.
Since all the seeds will be spaced at recommended intervals, there will be no overcrowding and therefore the old operation of 'thinning out can be dispensed with. Furthermore as the seeds in SEEDTAPE are equal in growth opportunity, the resulting crop should be of even size and condition, with little deformity, these advantages towards producing a regular, dependable and attractive vegetable yield will with the economies made possible by the saving on labour costs, will exceed the extra cost of the introduction of the new method. Another advantage is that seed requirement assessment will be made easier as the amount can be expressed in a linear total.
Flower tapes present the opportunity of colour variations along the same tape, making available designs and effects for parks and public gardens.
1. SEEDTAPE would by the correct spacing of seeds along it's length, enable the seed and the growing crop to have complete soil contact giving maximum nutriant absorbtion.
2. The process of 'thinning out', the result of planting too thickly, would be eliminated.
3. At market garden or farming proportions the saving of labour in the avoidance of the 'thinning out' and grading operations would more than compensate for the extra expense of the SEEDTAPE presentation.
4. Seed requirement and costing would be a precise calculation when the demand is expressed as a linear figure.
