Abstract

A pair of scissors which are suitable for use by schoolchildren are moulded entirely from a plastics material so that a conical cavity may be formed in one of the bows which opens towards the rear of the scissors and is provided with an adjacent seat area upon which a pencil sharpener blade may be fixed, thus forming an integral pencil sharpener. The blades of the scissors comprise a pair of opposed jaws which are moulded in the same moulding as the shanks and bows of the scissors and which are each provided with a recess into which a cutting blade is fitted. The cutting blade is formed separately by stamping from a plastics material at 90 DEG to give the cutting edge. The jaws are so formed that the cutting blades are concealed, when the jaws are closed, to the extent that only a thin strip of the reverse edge to the cutting edge is exposed. The cutting blade may have a curved surface whose radius of curvature corresponds to the bevelled surface of conventional scissors. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Scissors with integral pencil sharpener This invention relates to scissors for use by schoolchildren.
According to the present invention there is provided a pair of scissors in which one of the bows is provided with a pencil sharpener.
Preferably the bows are moulded in a plastics material so that a cone-shaped cavity is formed in one of the bows, with an adjacent seat area upon which a pencil sharpener blade may be fixed.
It is further preferred that the bow, shank and jaw which form each half of the scissors are moulded from plastics material as one piece and that the jaw is provided with a recess into which a cutting blade may be fitted.
The jaws are preferably formed such that the cutting blades are concealed within the jaws to the extent that only a longitudinal narrow strip thereof is visible from the outside when the jaws are closed, which strip has no cutting edge but is moulded in a curve whose radius df curvature corresponds to the ground, bevelled edge of traditional scissors, whilst their pressing at an angle of 90" gives the cutting edge, thus eliminating the usual bevelled edge ground on scissors blades.
Preferably the cutting blades are formed by stamping or pressing from plastics material at 900 to form the cutting edge.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. lisa plan view of the scissors, which shows the moulded pencil sharpener upon one of the bows partly in section to show the detail of the said pencil sharpener; Fig. 2 is a side view of the scissors shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a cross section through the scissors on the line A-A' of Fig. 1.
The scissors comprise two jaws 1, 1' of moulded plastics material. Each of the jaws 1, 1' has a recess into which a stamped and die-cast cutting blade 2 is fitted, such that only an elongate narrow strip 3 is visible from the outside. Each of the blades 2 has an extended portion 4 for location within the shanks which connect the jaws with the bows 5, 5'.
The bows 5, 5' are moulded with the respective jaws 1, 1' to form two elongate members which may be pivotally interconnected intermediate their ends to form the scissors.
The bows are moulded to a trapezoidal shape forming an angle of 27 to the longitudinal axis of the scissors, so that the point of intersection of the outer profile of each bow, would if extended, coincide with the pivot point or point of articulation of the scissors.
The scissors may be pivotted upon the normal dome-headed bolt or rivet.
In the moulding of the bows, one of them is provided with an integral conical cavity 7, opening towards the rear of the scissors, and a grooved seat to which a sharpening blade 8 may be fixed, suitably by means of a screw 9 or the like. The other bow may be provided with a stop 10 which provides for final adjustment at the finishing stage.
The longitudinal strips 3 have no cutting edge and are slightly curved, as shown in Fig. 3. The radius of curvature corresponds to the ground bevelled edge of conventional scissors.
Since these scissors are intended for use by schoolchildren, the contours of the scissors are in the form of smooth curves and the tips of the scissors are rounded, so that the possibility of them penetrating the skin of a user is reduced. Similarly the cutting blades have arcuate tips so that in the event of the jaw tip breaking, the cutting blade will be unlikely to pierce the skin.

2. A pair of scissors according to claim 1, wherein the scissor blades comprise a pair of opposed jaws each provided with a recess into which a cutting blade is fitted.
3. A pair of scissors according to claim 2, wherein the cutting blades are concealed within the jaws to the extent that only a longitudinal narrow strip thereof is visible from the outside when the jaws are closed, which strip has no cutting edge but has a curved shape, the radius of curvature of which corresponds to the ground, bevelled edge of traditional scissors.
4. A pair of scissors according to claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
5. A method of forming the scissors claimed in claim 1,2,3 or 4, comprising moulding the bows of the scissors in a plastics material so that a cone shaped cavity is formed in one of the bows, with an adjacent seat area upon which a pencil sharpener blade may be fixed.
6. A method according to claim 5 further comprising moulding the jaws of the scissors in a plastics material in the same moulding operation used to form the bows so that the respective jaws and bows are connected by shanks to form each half of the scissors in one piece.
7. A method according to claim 5 or claim 6, wherein the cutting blades are stamped from a plastics material.
