Abstract

A hollow plastics body formed of two parts shells (1A, 1B) welded to one another, preferably by ultrasonic welding means, and then externally ground to the required tolerance. An energy-directing rib (2) may be formed on the shell (1A). Such a hollow body can be in the form of a sphere or spheroid and can be particularly useful in the production of ball-regulated, liquid dispensing containers such as "roll- on" deodorant containers, ball valves and ball bearings. The hollow bodies can also be utilised in the manufacture of mattresses, chemical solution floats and water- buoyant clothing. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of plastics bodies According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a hollow plastics body formed of two part shells welded to one another and then externally ground to the required tolerance.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a hollow plastics sphere or spheroid formed of two part shells welded to one another and then externally ground to the required tolerance.
The invention is particularly applicable to the manufacture of plastics balls for use in "roll-on" deodorant containers, but can be applied to various fields such as the manufacture of plastics ball bearings, chemical solution floats, ball valves and water-buoyant clothing, polystyrene and polyethylene being suitable plastics materials for the hollow bodies.
Balls for "roll-on" deodorant containers at present are made from solid plastics material which has been injection moulded and then ground to size. However, there has been a problem that the solid balls so produced can shrink too small if not cooled in time and the working tolerances have been greater than is desirable. It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide more accurate tolerances whilst saving on the amount of plastics material required for each ball.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which the single Figure is an exploded side view of a plastics body in the form of a sphere to form a ball for, for example, a "rollon" deodorant container (ball-regulated, liquid dispensing container).
The plastics body illustrated is made from two part shells 1 A, 1 B which have complementary mating rims, each part sheil-having been made by injection moulding, a separate tool having been required for each of the two part shells. For the purpose just mentioned, polystyrene is the material preferably used to form the part shells.
The part shells are placed together and welded to form a hollow body. It is preferably to perform the welding by ultrasonic means, in which case the two part shells should have a clearance fit when mated together to allow for the ultrasonic vibration. With ultrasonic welding, it is desirable to provide places at which the ultrasonic energy can be concentrated to enhance the effect and for this reason, a sharp edge 2 can be provided on the rim of one of the part shells, e.g. the part shell 1A, the edge 2 facing the rim of the part shell 1 B.
The hollow body, in the form of a sphere, spheroid or other so formed is then ground to the required tolerance, which can be of the order of + 2-0 for a range of diameter, in the case of plastics balls, of between approximately 1.5-5.0 cm, manufacture of the part shells tending to produce a more accurate sphere than when a solid sphere is produced by injection moulding.
It will be appreciated that the hollow of each body can contain means to enable the body to act as an indicator.
If the body is made of polyethylene, then such material could enable bodies of such material to be put into mattresses.
1. A hollow plastics body formed of two part shells welded to one another and then externally ground to the required tolerance.
2. A hollow plastics sphere or spheroid formed of two part shells welded to one another and then externally ground to the required tolerance.

4. A hollow body as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein each part shell consists of polyethylene.
5. A hollow body as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the two part shells have been ultrasonically welded to one another.
6. A hollow body as claimed in claim 5, wherein a sharp edge was provided on the rim of one of the part shells to enhance the ultrasonic effect.
7. A hollow body as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the two part shells were provided with complementary mating rims.

10. Water-buoyant clothing containing hollow bodies each as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7.
11. A ball-regulated, liquid dispensing container, the ball comprising a hollow sphere as claimed in claim 2, or claim 3, 5, 6 or 7 as appendant to claim 2.
12. A ball valve, the ball being formed of a hollow sphere or spheroid as claimed in claim 2, or any one of claims 3 to 7 as appendant to claim 2.
13. A ball bearing formed of a hollow sphere as claimed in claim 2 or any one of claims 3 to 7 as appendant to claim 2.
14. A hollow plastics body, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
