Abstract

If a container for liquids is moulded from plastics by conventional injection moulding in two parts, the joint between the two parts creates an uneven surface within the container which makes the container difficult to clean. The present invention provides a container with a smooth interior surface obtained by rotational blow moulding. Strengthening end flanges 12/14 and a handle 16 are provided. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A container for carbonated liquids This invention relates to containers of plastics material for liquids pressurised by gas.
Plastic containers have not been used for carbonated beverages except where the pressures are low, for example below 10 p.s.i. This is because the internal surface of a plastic container cannot be made in one piece by injection moulding but must be made in at least two parts which then have to be joined together for example by welding. The joint cannot be effected so as to produce a smooth surface within the container and this makes the container too difficult to clean to meet the necessary standards. Thus although metal containers are more expensive than those of plastic they can be cleaned more easily and hence are more economic in the long term.
According to the invention there is provided a container of plastics material for liquids pressurised by gas wherein the container has no joints and is formed with a smooth internal surface by rotational blow moulding.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a container in side elevation.
Referring to the drawing a plastic container 10 is made by rotational or blow moulding so that there are no joints. The top and/or bottom of the container can be strengthened by additional pieces 12 and 14 respectively. The pieces 12 and 14 may be made from plastics, for example by injection moulding and secured to the container in any suitable manner. A carrying handle 16 may also be provided for example as illustrated.
1. A container of plastics material for liquids pressurised by gas wherein the container has no joints and is formed with a smooth internal surface by rotational blow moulding.
2. A container as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the top and/or bottom of the container are strengthened.
3. A container as claimed in any preceding claim including a carrying handle.
4. A container substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
