Abstract
A mechanism for driving a wheel of a cycle or the like comprises two toothed sectors (3, 12) which are fastened to oscillating pedal levers (17, 18), pivotable about a shaft (2), and are in mesh with a pinion (1) so that the two levers are constrained to pivot in opposite directions. A conical toothed wheel (9) is connected to rotate with the pinion (1) and meshes with two planet wheels (5, 14) connected via ratchet wheels (6, 15) to a drum (7) on the wheel so that the latter is continuously rotated by means of the alternate oscillation of the pedal levers. Spring means designed to restore each pedal lever to a resting position during the driving phase of the other are also provided. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A kinematic drive mechanism for a wheel of a cycle or the like
This invention relates to a kinematic drive mechanism for a wheel of a cycle or the like, particularly, but not exclusively suitabie for providing a drive for a cycle or the like provided with pedals moving with alternate motion.
As is known, the pedals in a traditional bicycle carry out fuil rotation. This means that the muscular strength of the cyclist cannot be fully exploited, because of dead-points in the pedal movement and the limited length of the pedals. Moreover, as the transmission is exterior to the bicycle frame, it is necessary to provide a suitable protection means, so that the cyclists clothes do not get caught up in the transmission mechanism. There is thus a need for a generaily improved kinematic drive mechanism.
According to the present invention there is provided a kinematic drive mechanism for a wheel of a cycle or the like, including a drum fixedly connectible to the wheel to be driven for rotation therewith, two toothed sectors housed in the drum and each fixedly connectible to a pedal for pivotal movement therewith, a pinion housed in the drum and meshing with the two sectors, a conical toothed wheel in the drum and fixedly attached to the pinion for rotation therewith, two planet wheels housed in the drum meshing with the conical toothed wheel, and connected to the drum through respective ratchet wheels, so that the drum may be set in continuously rotating motion by means of alternate pivotal operation of the pedals when connected to the sectors, and means for restoring each of the sectors and thereby each of the pedals when connected thereto, to a rest or start position in turn during the driving stroke of the other.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made by way of example to the accompanying single figure drawing which shows in vertical section a view through a kinematic drive mechanism according to the invention.
As shown in the drawing a kinematic drive mechanism of the invention for a wheel of a cycle or the like includes a shaft 2 secured to the cycle frame. A pair of coupling portions 1 9 fit on this shaft 2, in such a way as to perform a 90 pivotal movement around the shaft axis. One end of each coupling portion 1 9 is connectible to a pedal 18, and the other end to a respective toothed sector 3. There is also a return spring (not shown). Sector 13 meshes with a pinion 1, to which a conical toothed wheel 9 is rotatively connected. The wheel 9 meshes with two opposed planet wheels 5 and 14, which are freely rotatively mounted via ball races on the coupling portions 19, and are exteriorly connected to a drum 7 through ratchet wheels 6 and 1 5. The drum 7 is fixedly securable to a wheel and may form the wheel hub.
Pedal 18, by moving around the wheel shaft 2 through 90 , pivots sector 3 too, which, while turning around shaft 2 in mesh with pinion 1 makes it turn.
At the same time, pinion 1 makes the sector 1 2 turn the other way round, and drives the return of the opposite pedal. Pinion 1 is connected to the conical toothed wheel 9 which makes planet wheels 14 and 5 turn in the opposite direction the one with reference to the other. The ratchet wheels 6 and 1 5 are linked to the planet wheels and to drum 7.
The alternate turning of wheels 6 and 1 5 cause drum rotation.
When the pedals are still, the drum can turn freely on the ratchet wheels. Thus by means of the alternate motion of the pedals, a continuous rotation of the drum is effected and thus of the driving wheel. As the run thereof is limited to a parabola without dead points, peak efficiency is thus approached.
1. A kinematic drive mechanism for a wheel of a cycle or the like, including a drum fixedly connectible to the wheel to be driven for rotation therewith, two toothed sectors housed in the drum and each fixedly connectible to a pedal for pivotal movement therewith, a pinion housed in the drum and meshing with the two sectors, a conical toothed wheel in the drum and fixedly attached to the pinion for rotation therewith, two planet wheels housed in the drum, meshing with the conical toothed wheel, and connected to the drum through respective ratchet wheels, so that the drum may be set in continuously rotating motion by means of alternatie pivotal operation of the pedals when connected to the sectors, and means for restoring each of the sectors and thereby each of the pedals when connected thereto, to a rest or start position in turn during the driving stroke of the other.
2. A mechanism according to claim 1, including a shaft attachable to a frame having the wheel to be driven, on which shaft the sectors, planet wheels and ratchet wheels are mounted in the drum.
3. A mechanism according to claim 2, in which the two sectors are arranged to act alternately in response to a pivotal movement of approximately 90 of the pedals when connected thereto.
4. A mechanism according to claim 2 or claim 3, in which the drum is connected to the planet wheels via the two ratchet wheels which are arranged to act alternately.
5. A mechanism according to any one of claims 2 to 4, in which the sectors each include a tubular coupling portion pivotally
