Description
SPECIFICATION
A seat adjustable by a motor particularly a vehicle seat
The invention relates to a seat adjustable by a motor and has particular though not exclusive application to a seat for a vehicle.
Such a seat may have a seat component which is longitudinally displaceable on a rail arrangement and can be adjusted in height and inclination by gear members driven by the motor and including toothed segments for moving pivoting supports which are disposed between a seat component carrier and seat rails, limit positions of inclination of the seat component being defined by a stationary stop which limits the movement of at least one of the gear members.
In a previously proposed vehicle seat of the above mentioned kind, one of the gear components associated with the motor, such as a cog wheel in engagement with a motor pinion, has an entraining cam. This can entrain at least one loosely rotatable drag disc provided with a cam. In the limit position of rotation the cam on the drag disc comes into contact with a fixed abutment cam for limiting the rotary movement. It has also been proposed to have a plur alityofdrag discs which are loosely rotatable and disposed one behind the other in an axial direction, each disc having a cam on one side, which can be brought into contact with the periphery of the next disc, the cam on the disc furthest away from the gear component being adapted to run up against the cam on a bearing wall receiving the gear components. As already mentioned, the drag discs are preferably disposed in the region of the gear component next to the drive motor, in order to minimise the blocking of the gear components by the tension inherent in the material. This is because the torque at the gear stage following the drive motor is still largely unaffected by the reduction ratio of the gear, and thus still has a relatively low value in this location. Where there is a relatively long adjusting distance, however, quite a large number of drag discs may be required. When the end position is reached the cam on the last disc strikes relatively hard against the stop cam, leading to shock loads in the whole gear. The shocks are particularly hard when the adjusting movement of the gear is aided by the weight of a person using the seat.Furthermore the drag discs, their entraining cams and the stationary stop cam need to be designed to withstand high loads resulting from the vehicle crashing.
According to the invention there is provided a seat adjustable by a motor in which a seat component is longitudinally displaceable on a rail arrangement and can be adjusted in height and inclination by gear members driven by the motor and including toothed segments for moving pivoting supports which are arranged pivotably between a seat component carrier and seat rails, limit positions of inclination of the seat component being defined by a stationary stop which limits the movement of at least one of the gear members, one of the toothed segments has two locking cams spaced apart to correspond to limit positions of inclination of the seat component and which alternatively come into contact with a stop on a gear box and at least one limit position of inclination is cushioned by a preceding buffer.
Thus the adjusting distance can be limited without special additional components of the adjusting gear, and blocking of the gear can be avoided by bracing the gear components against the stop.
The locking cams on the toothed segment, which limit the adjusting movement, are actual components of a gear member, so that no additional components are required to limit the adjusting movement. The use of an elastic buffer associated with the locking cam which limits the bottom inclined position makes it possible to cushion the end phase of the adjusting movement, which is influenced by the weight of the seat-user, thereby (a) avoiding undue abutment shock and (b) counteracting any bracing of the gear components.
For the purpose of adjusting the height of inclination of the seat component carrier, each pivoting support is preferably joined non-rotatably to a respective toothed segment forming the output member of the gear and, together with the toothed segment, is linked with the seat component carrier at the rear of the seat; and, at the front of the seat the carrier is supported on a fixed base, for example the floor of the vehicle, with a pivot joint by means of a coupling strap, while the supporting rails are fixed to the fixed base. The use of a coupling strap at the front of the seat enables the front part to make a corresponding movement when the rear part is raised or lowered.
In order that the stop can also be used to stabilise the gear box, it is preferably constructed as a bolt extending transversely through the gear box and interconnecting the side walls thereof. The elastic buffer, preferably made of a plastics or rubber, is fixed to the seat component carrier outside the gear, preferably independently of the stop formed by a bolt and independently of the locking cams in order to protect it from lubricants; and has a head located between the seat component carrier and the supporting rail.
Lifting of the seat component carrier as a result of a crash, with possible breakage of the locking cams, can be avoided by providing a crash stop on the carrier, in the region of the position at which the pivoting support is articulated thereto, to limit the pivoting movement of the support.
To increase the stability of the seat component carrier which preferably has an angle section, reinforcing ribs can be provided at least at its ends to brace the limbs of the angle section against one another.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa side view of a seat according to the invention, indicated in thin continuous lines, with a means for adjusting the height and inclination of the seat located between its rail arrangement and the floor of the vehicle;

It should first be pointed out that the embodiment illustrated is a seat for a motor vehicle, since a seat with adjusting means is particularly advantageous in a motor vehicle. However, seats for other purposes may be constructed in accordance with the invention.
The seat illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 has a rail arrangement 11 at the underside of its base part 10,
at each of the two longitudinal sides thereof, and a seat component carrier 12, 13 is mounted on each
rail arrangement 11. Each carrier 12, 13 is of angle section and is connected to a respective supporting rail 14, 15 by coupling straps 16 at the front of the seat and by pivoting supports 17 at the rear. Each pivoting support 17 is non-rotatably connected to a toothed segment 18 which, together with the support 17, is supported pivotably on a common pin 19 disposed at the rear end of the seat component carrier 12, 13. The teeth on the segments 18 engage the teeth of a pinion 20, and one pinion 20 is mounted rotatably in the vertical limb of each of the carriers 12,13.
On one longitudinal side of the seat the toothed pinion 20 is a component of a gear arrangement (seen particularly in Figures 3 to 5) which is accommodated in a dish-shaped gear box 21. A worm gear arrangement 22 of an electric motor 23 is joined by a flange to the gear box 21, and a pinion 24 which provides the secondary drive from the worm gear arrangement 22 forms the drive into the gear box 21.
The pinion 24 meshes with a cog wheel 25, which is non-rotatably connected to a second pinion 26
mounted co-axially in the gear box 21. The pinion 26 engages the teeth of a segment 27, which is in turn seated on the same shaft as and non-rotatably con
nected to the pinion 20 engaged with the toothed segment 18. The pinion 20 projects from the gear
box and is located at the opposite side of the vertical
limb of the seat component carrier 12. The pinions
20, mounted at each longitudinal side of the carriers
12 and 13, are non-rotatably interconnected by a transmission shaft 28. On rotation of the motor pin
ion 24 the cog wheel 25 meshing with it is also
rotated and in turn rotates the pinion 26, non
rotatably connected to it, in the same direction. The
pinion 26, which is in engagement with the segment
27, turns the segment 27, thereby also turning the
pinion 20 non-rotatably connected to the segment
27. The pinion 20 pivots the segment 18, meshing with it, about the joint pin 19, thereby also turning the pivoting support 17, which is non-rotatablycon- nected to the segment 18, about the common pin 19.
Since the support 17 bears with a swivel joint on a bearing bolt 29 fixed to the supporting rail 14, its pivoting movement causes the rear end of the seat component carrier 12 either two be raised or lowered, according to the rotary direction of the motor pinion 24. The seat carrier 12 can carry out a pivoting movement due to the coupling strap 16 pivoted to it, the strap 16 in turn being supported, together with the supporting rail 14, on a joint pin 30 which is stationary relative to the floor of the vehicle. Thus the front end of the seat component carrier is raised or lowered, dependent on the pivoting movement of the support 17 at the rear of the seat.
The pinion 20, together with the toothed segment 27, is mounted on an end of shaft 32, in the gear box 21 and in a bearing bracket 31, the bracket 31 being joined to the gear box and to the carrier 12. The transmission shaft 28 connects the pinion 20 nonrotatably to the pinion 20 mounted in the opposite carrier 13. Thus the rotary motion imparted to the gear arrangement by the motor 23 is transmitted to the two pinions 20, one at each longitudinal side of the seat. The toothed segments 18 and thus the pivoting supports 17 on both sides of the seat are thereby moved synchronously. The seat component carriers 12 and 13 are therefore raised and lowered simultaneously. The raising and lowering movement of the carriers 12 and 13 is limited by locking cams 33 disposed on the segment 27 at a side opposite its teeth. The cams 33 can come alternately into contact with a bolt 34 at the limit of the pivoting movement.
The bolt 34 extends through the gear box and forms a stop. The distance between the locking cams 33 is such that the toothed segment 27 can pivot the distance required for the intended lifting movement.
On both longitudinal sides of the seat the seat component carriers 12 and 13, mounted belowthe rail arrangement 11, each have a buffer 35 in the region of the pinion 20 and joined to the carrier 12 by a flange. The buffer 35 may be made of an elastic plastics material or rubber, with a head 36 located between the horizontal limb of each carrier 12, 13 and the top of the respective supporting rail 14, 15.
The buffer 35 cushions the descending movement of the seat component 10 during the last phase of the lowering movement, so that the locking cam 33 associated with the lowering movement strikes
against the sto 34with only low kinetic energy.
The seat component carriers 12 and 13 are fixed in the raised position set for them by the self-locking action of the worm gear 22. In the event of the worm gear and locking cams 33 being broken in a crash, however, crash stops 37 are provided to prevent the carriers 12 and 13 holding the seat from being swung right up. A crash stop 37 is fixed to each of the carriers 12 and 13 in the region of the pivot formed by the common pin 19. The stops 37 project into the plane of the pivoting supports 17. If a crash should take place, therefore, the seat component carriers 12 and 13 will be lifted only a negligible distance above their raised position shown in Figures 4 and 7.
As can be seen particularly from Figure 2, the carriers 12 and 13 contain slots 38 in their end portions, for a screw connection to the rail arrangement 11. In order to prevent the carriers 12 and 13, which have an angle section, from being bent upwards or torn out in the fastening region of the rail arrangement 11 in the event of an accident, the end portions of the carriers 12 and 13 are reinforced, e.g. by having ribs 39 welded onto them.
