Abstract
206,499. Gould, R. Howe-. Nov. 3, 1922, [Convention date]. Secret and selective systems. -A message is transmitted with an irregular but periodic and continuous variation of wavelength to which the tuning of the receiving aerial is synchronized by means of a rotating cam. A motor 7 controlled by a governor 10 rotates a spindle 8 on which is mounted a cam 13, Fig. 2, having an irregular outline cor. responding to the variations in wave-length imparted to the transmitted message. The edge of the cam controls the setting of the vario-coupler 4, 6 through an arm 14. Before the commencement of transmission the switch 19 is moved over to connect up the circuit 12 coupled to a valve 21. A prolonged calling signal energizes a relay 22 and closes a local circuit containing a solenoid 24, the core 25 of which is fully raised against a dash-pot 26. At the cessation of the preliminary signal the core 25 drops freely, with sufficient momentum to depress a lever 25, and so clutch the spindle 8 to the driving-shaft of the motor 7. The dash-pot 26 prevents the core from being fully retracted by the effect of atmospheric or fortuitous signals. In a modification several cams similar to 13 are mounted on the spindle 8 and are arranged so that the receiving aerial may be tuned to one or other of various simultaneous transmissions on different basic wave-lengths.
