Grates. - Comprises, in s tepgrates, arr a ngements allowing differential movement of the different sections and a construction permitting instant detachment of t h e actual fuel supporting surface. The sections are pivoted on transverse bars 8, and are connected up in two sets a, b which are rocked in opposite directions by eccentrics 13 and connecting links 11, the arrangement preferably being of the diagonal character indicated in Fig. 2. By adjustment of the connecting pins 11 in the slotted arms 9 of the grate sections the amount of motion can be varied, or, by omitting the pin, may be made zero. Also by altering the effective length of the first link 12 by means of the pin-and-slot connection 16, 17, the inclinations of the sections can be varied. In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the steps, which are formed with " risers " having slots 23, are pivoted alternately to fixed bearers 26<1> and bearers 26<11> mounted in a frame 31 which can be rocked by parallel arms 32, 33 pivoted in the fixed frame and actuated by an eccentric 36 and adjustable linkage 35, 34. The whole grate is pivoted on brackets 29 and can be adjusted, or lowered to give access to the furnace, by means of a winch 40. The fuel-supporting portions of the sections are secured to their supports by pins 14. Specification 27755/13 is referred to.
