Abstract

Lifting apparatus for lifting and manoeuvring loads (e.g. girders) into position comprising a lifting platform (1) connected through a cable (8) and a hydraulically or pneumatically operated piston cylinder device (9) to a suspension plate (7) connected to a suspension point (e.g. a crane). The end of the cable remote from the suspension plate is connected to the lifting platform at a position adjacent the centre of gravity of the apparatus and the end of the piston cylinder device remote from the suspension plate is connected to the lifting platform at a position towards one end of the platform whereby upon operation of the piston cylinder device the load may be tilted. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Lifting device This invention relates to lifting apparatus for lifting and manoeuvring loads into position. More especially, the invention concerns lifting apparatus which is particularly suitable for manoeuvring into position elongate loads where the ability to tilt such a load through a range of angles and then to relevel it when in position is desirable.
According to the present invention, there is provided lifting apparatus comprising a lifting platform for supporting a load to be lifted and connected through a cable and an hydraulically or pneumatically operated piston-cylinder device to a suspension plate adapted to be connected to a suspension point, the end of the cable remote from the suspension plate being connected to the lifting platform at a position in the general vicinity of the centre of gravity of the apparatus and the end of the piston-cylinder device remote from the suspension plate being connected to the lifting platform at a position towards one end of the same.
Preferably the lifting platform comprises a beam to the undersurface of which is secured a lifting plate whose width is greater than that of the beam so that it protrudes outwardly beyond the side edges of the beam. The protruding side edges of the lifting plate may each be formed with a series of bolt holes which locate with like holes formed in a load to be lifted to facilitate connection thereto. Additionally, or alternatively, one or more of the bolt holes formed in the lifting plate are slotted to enable loads with hole patterns differing to that of the lifting plate to be connected thereto; in this case, a series of adapter plates having various hole patterns may be provided to facilitate appropriate alignment of the lifting plate and the respective load.An adapter plate may be retained in its appropriate position relative to the lifting plate and the load by one or more shear plates.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figures 1 and 2 are side views of lifting apparatus in accordance with the invention with the apparatus respectively in a levelled and tilted position; Figure 3 is a section taken along line Ill-Ill of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a side view of a detail of the lifting apparatus taken in the direction of arrow IV of Figure 2.
The lifting apparatus illustrated in the drawings in especially suitable for lifting and manoeuvering into position heavy elongate loads where the ability to tilt and relevel a load in a relatively confined space is advantageous.
The apparatus comprises a lifting beam 1 to the undersurface of which is welded a plate 2, whose width is greater than that of the beam. Each overlapping side face of the plate 2 is formed with a longitudinally extending series of holes 3 for receiving bolts to enable a load 4 to be attached to the underside of the beam 1. The holes 3 generally locate with holes formed in the load 4 to be manoeuvred. To enable loads with varying hole patterns to be lifted using the same lifting beam, one or more of the holes 3a are slotted and individual adapter plates 5 employed to provide suitable matching of some of the holes 3a and the corresponding holes formed in the load to be lifted. The number of adapter plates required will, of course, depend upon the number of differently holed loads to be lifted by the apparatus. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the adapter plate 5 is restrained with shear plates 6 to retain it in the appropriate position relative to the plate 3 and the load 4.
The lifting beam 1 is suspended from a suspension point through a suspension plate 7 to which are connected a cable 8 and an hydraulically or pneumatically operated pistoncylinder device 9, supplied with hydraulic fluid or air through hoses connected to a suitable pump.
The suspension plate 7 comprises two spaced generally triangular plates having at each corner an aperture through which a respective pin 11 can be passed to retain a "D" shaped shackle 12 for connection to a suspension point, for example, a crane hook, a looped end of the cable 8 and the cylinder end of the piston-cylinder device 9. The looped end of the cable remote from the suspension plate 7 is connected to a laterally extending pin 1 3 located within an aperture positioned substantially mid way along the length of the lifting beam (i.e. at the centre of gravity of the load to be lifted).
The piston end of the device 9 is connected to a laterally extending pin 14 located within an aperture positioned towards one end of the lifting beam 1.
In use of the illustrated lifting apparatus, the elongate load to be lifted and manoeuvred into position is first bolted to the lifting beam plate 2 with its centre of gravity sited generally below the pin 13 using the appropriate adapter plate 5 to provide the required alignment of several of the bolt holes of the lifting beam plate 2 and the load 4.
The lifting beam 1 with load attached is then raised in the conventional manner. To provide precise control during manoeuvring of the load, the piston-cylinder device is operated through the pump to tilt the beam and load through an angle dependent upon the stroke of the piston.
Normally, the maximum angle of tilt would be of the order of 600 to the horizontal. When in the tilted position, the load is shared between the cable 8 and the piston-cylinder device 9. The load can be held at any required inclination through operation of a pilot operated check valve 1 5.
The lifting apparatus described can be used for manoeuvring a variety of loads into a required position. Examples of such loads include foundry castings, pre-cast concrete units, steel fabrications and machinery components.
