Abstract

The joist comprises an elongate beam to be supported between bearings and having two opposed flanges on which rectangular standard building blocks will rest as an infill. The outer edges of the flanges are stepped back so as to form a bearing surface bounded on their inner edges by glazing-nib-like abutments which locate the blocks longitudinally. The joist is of I-section with a depending projection for sitting on supports and with the upper crossmember narrower than the lower crossmember forming the flanges so the upper crossmember provides further abutments for locating the blocks. The upper surfaces of the blocks and the joists are flush and the entire surface can be grouted together and/or have a screed or other finish. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Pre-cast concrete joint floor Introduction The floor consists of a pre-cast concrete joist at various spacings and incorporating as required standard building wall or floor blocks to form a suspended floor. The pre-cast joists span between supports.
By the formation of a nib on the joist it is possible to use standard blocks as an integral part of the floor which is grouted together to form a composite whole with or without structural toppings. I claim that this invention uses a precast member as distinct from a pre-stressed member and in this form adopts the use of standard building blocks as infillers as distinct from purpose made blocks. The presence of the restraining nib makes this possible.
The Joists The joists are formed using concrete and reinforcement. The reinforcement is not prestressed. The joist has a vertical and horizontal nib which prevents the block from tipping even if the block has cracked. Manufacture of the joist is by casting or pressing.
Construction The floor is constructed by placing the pre-cast joists on to supports, piacing blocks between the joists (although some times for structural reasons joists may be placed side by side) and then, if required, grouting the whole together.
1. A pre-cast concrete joist for floors comprises an elongate beam having two opposed flanges on which rectangular in-fill blocks will rest bridging between two joists and also having an abutment for locating each block transversely of the flanges.
2. A joist as claimed in claim 1 wherein at least some of the abutments are formed by stepping back the outer edges of the flanges so as to leave bearing surfaces bounded on their inner edges by glazing-nib-like abutments.
3. A joist as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein at least some of the abutments are formed by the joist having a general I-section with the upper narrower cross member of the I providing the abutments.
4. A floor comprising joists supported by supports above the ground, each joist comprising an elongate beam having opposed flanges and abutments and in-fill blocks resting on the flanges and bridging between two joists, the blocks being located in their longitudinal direction (i.e.
transversely to the flanges) by the abutments.
5. A floor according to claim 4 wherein the upper surfaces of the blocks and joists are flush.
6. A floor substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
