Abstract
A motor vehicle body has a personnel carrying compartment having a pair of longitudinally disposed seat assemblies. The seat assemblies each include a seat back 19 and a seat base 15a and each assembly is mounted so as to be pivotable about an axis 16 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle body. The seat assemblies can be positioned such that the seat backs are juxtaposed adjacent the longitudinal axis of the vehicle body or pivoted to a second position in which the seat backs are adjacent the sides of the vehicle body with the seat bases facing one another. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Seating assembly for motor vehicles
This invention relates to motor vehicles and more particularly to a motor vehicle body having a pair of longitudinally disposed pivotable seat assemblies which allow the occupants to be seated face to face or back to back for fast dismounting.
Heretofore, motor vehicles, particularly those used for transporting combat personnel have bodies which have fixed side walls and seats, such that the personnel are seated face to face. This arrangement is rather disadvantageous in that in cases of emergency, such as in an ambush, the personnel could not quickly dismount to take over defensive positions.
The invention provides a motor vehicle body having a personnel carrying compartment which compartment comprises a pair of seat assemblies pivotable about axes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle body, the seat assemblies each comprising a seat back and a seat base the arrangement being such that the assemblies can be rotated about their axes from a position in which the seat backs are juxtaposed adjacent the longitudinal axis of the vehicle body, to a position in which the seat backs are disposed adjacent the sides of the compartment with the seat bases facing one another.
The main advantage of this invention is that a motor vehicle is provided having a pair of pivotable seat assemblies disposed longitudinally of the vehicle whereby the seats can be positioned such that the occupants are seated face to face or back to back facing the open sides of the motor vehicle body.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a transport motor vehicle body when mounted in a lightweight motor vehicle.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the vehicle shown in
Figure 1 with the floor sectioned.
Figure 3 is an exploded view of the seat assemblies of the transport vehicle.
With reference to the drawings, a transport motor vehicle body 1 has a floor section 2 having upwardly offset longitudinal side members 3, with holes 4 in the top surface adjacent the front and rear ends thereof, outer rear and front vertical posts 5 and 6 respectively, inner rear posts 7, rear walls 8, a rear opening 9 between said rear inner posts, rear windows 10 and a roof 11.
Pivotally connected to the inner rear post and the front wall on suitable bushes 12 and 13, respectively, are the end of the transverse sides of the seat frames 1 5 which have rearwardly and forwardly extending pins 1 6 and 1 7 which are
rotatably fitted into the bushings 12 and 13. A seat back 1 9 is pivotaily connected to the
longitudinally side 1 8 of each seat frame.
Each seat back has several spaced bushes 20 welded thereto and in line with corresponding bushes (not shown) welded to the longitudinal side of the respective seat frame. Inserted or threaded through said bushes, is an elongate rod 21. Upstanding lugs 24 are provided adjacent the opposed longitudinal sides of each seat back 19 which lugs fit into corresponding holes 4 provided in the respective side members 3. The lugs 24 of each seat back also are dimensioned to locate in holes 4a provided in the floor 2 of the vehicle inwardly from the sides and preferably longitudinally in line with the corresponding inner posts. As shown in Figure 2, the seat assemblies are pivotable so that the seat backs can be brought into line with the outer rear and front posts at the longitudinal sides of the floor so that the seat bases face one another. The seat assemblies also can be pivoted so that the seat backs are located adjacent the middle portion of the floor, with the seat bases then facing the open sides of the motor vehicle body.
As shown in Figure 3, each seat frame 15 comprises a generally U-shaped channel member 1 5a with one longitudinal side open to detachably receive a seat base S. If a bulky load is to be carried when the seat assemblies are located inwardly of the vehicle, the seat base is detached from the frame by unscrewing retainer screws 25 provided adjacent the free ends of the frame member 1 spa.
While this vehicle body would be very useful to the armed forces, including the police, it could also be used by repair and maintenance crews.
Various modifications to the invention may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the
appended claims.
CLAIMS
1. A motor vehicle body having a personnel carrying compartment which compartment comprises a pair of seat assemblies pivotable about axes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle body, the seat assemblies each comprising a seat back and a seat base the arrangement being such that the assemblies can be rotated about their.axes from a position in which the seat backs are juxtaposed adjacent the longitudinal axis of the vehicle body, to a position in which the seat backs are disposed adjacent the sides of the compartment with the seat bases facing one another.
2. A motor vehicle body as claimed in claim 1 wherein each seat assembly is pivotably connected to a front and a rear wall of the compartment.
3. A motor vehicle body as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the seat back of each seat assembly is provided with engaging means which mate with cooperating means provided by the floor of the compartment to locate the seat assembly in either of said positions.
4. A motor vehicle body as claimed in claim 3 wherein the engaging means comprise a plurality of lugs upstanding from opposite longitudinal edges of the seat back, the cooperating means
