Description

SPECIFICATION Production of drip irrigation hose This invention relates to a process of producing drip irrigation hose or pipe.
It has previously been proposed to produce drip irrigation hose by applying to a previously formed plastics hose a plurality of drip outlet members. The drip outlet members are applied to the hose at spaced points along its length, and their application to the hose necessitates cutting the hose then joining it after inserting the drip outlet member.
The Applicant has previously proposed drip outlet members which can be applied to plastics hose or tube without the need to cut and subsequently join the hose. Such drip outlet members are the subject of Applicants' Spanish Utility Model Right No. 183258 and 189807, each of which discloses a single component drip outlet member formed with an external screw thread and designed specifically for introduction into plastics hose or tube without the need to cut and joint the hose.
The drip outlet member disclosed herein is of the type forming the subject of Applicants' aforementioned Utility Model Rights Nos.
183258 and 189807.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a process for the production of continuous drip irrigation hose which does not require the cutting, introduction, and subsequent joining steps of the known process.
According to the present invention a process for producing drip irrigation hose of the kind comprising a flexible hose or tube having drip outlet members at spaced points along its length, comprises extruding plastics material to form the flexible hose or tube, the extrusion machine incorporating an inclined head through which drip outlet members are supplied, said drip outlet members being introduced by said head into said hose or tube as it is formed, said drip outlet members being withdrawn from the head by the flow of plastics material forming the hose or tube, and said members being delivered by way of said head at a rate such, in relation to the speed of extrusion of the hose or tube, that a predetermined spacing of drip outlet members along the length of the tube or hose occurs.
Preferably, said inclined head houses a hollow cylindrical component formed from heat resisting and heat insulating material, said hollow cylindrical component guiding said drip outlet members and being capable of movement axially of the extrusion machine.
Desirably the anle of inclination of said inclined head is such as to facilitate sliding movement of the drip outlet members through the head to the point at which they are introduced into the hose or tube being formed, so thereafter to be carried by the hose or tube through the outlet of the extrusion machine.
Conveniently the extrusion machine includes a hopper in which the drip outlet members are stored, aid hopper being located in a plane above the plane of the inclined head, the members being fed from the hopper by way of a channel into a cylindrical container positioned in a plane intermediate the planes of the hopper and the head, said cylindrical container including a vibratory feeder the exit of which communicates with the inlet of the inclined head of the extrusion machine, the rate of supply of drip outlet members by said vibratory feeder to said inclined head being controlled in relation to the speed of extrusion to produce a desired spacing of drip outlet members along the length of the extruded hose or tube.
Desirably said drip outlet members are hollow cylindrical components having along at least two thrids of their outer surface a screw thread divided into three sections of screw thread of different directions, each member having a pair of apertures adjacent one end of the thread whereby liquid within the hose and the central bore of the member can flow into the thread, the thread and the inner surface of the region of the hose containing the member defining a helical passage through which liquid from the hose can flow, the member and the hose together defining at the opposite end of the thread a decompression chamber which in turn communicates with a groove in each of a pair of diametrically opposed outward projections of the member.
Preferably the process includes the subsequent step of forming an aperture in the region of the hose or tube overlying each drip outlet member.
Desirably after passing from the extrusion machine the hose or tube containing the drip outlet members spaced along its length passes through a cutter station wherein a pair of cutters co-act with said diametrically opposed projections of each drip outlet member to cut apertures in the hose in the region of said projection so that liquid flowing from the hose by way of said thread, said decompression chamber, and said grooves in the projections drips from the hose by way of said apertures.
One example of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of apparatus for producing continuous drip irrigation hose, Figure 2 is a diagrammatic side view, partly in section, of a length of hose containing a drip outlet member, and Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the hose of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the process to be described relates to the production of plastics hose or tube incorporating its own drip outlet members capable, in use, of providing drip irrigation outlets.
The process basically is one of extruding plastics hose or tube and the introduction into the hose being formed, of drip outlet mem bers. The drip outlet members being intro duced at regular intervals which have been previously determined in relation to the speed of extrusion such that in the final product a predetermined spacing of drip outlet members along the length of the hose occurs.
Fig. 1 illustrates an extrusion plant wherein there is an extrusion machine 1 having an inclined internal head 2. The extrusion machine 1 is similar to extrusion equipment used to extrude insulating sheaths onto conductive cores to produce insulated cables.
The inclined head 2 of the machine 1 is of a suitable size to house within it a cylinder of heat insulating and heat resisting material, for example TEFLON (Registered Trade Mark).
The hollow cylinder acts as a mandrel of the extruder and does in effect produces the hollow centre of the hose or tube extruded continuously from the die of the extrusion machine. The hollow cylinder constituting the mandrel is movable axially of the extruder.
Drip outlet members 16 (to be described in more detail later) are fed through the hollow cylinder constituting the mandrel so that as they exit from the mandrel they are automatically within the hose being extruded. Moreover, as they exit from the mandrel each member 16 will be gripped by the hose being extruded, and will be carried with the hose out of the die of the extruder. The rate of supply of members 16 to the mandrel is controlled in relation to the speed of extrusion such that a predetermined spacing of members 16 along the length of the extruded hose occurs.
The inclined head 2 of the extruder machine 1 is arranged with an angle of inclination such, in relation to the axis of the extruding machine, that sliding movement of the members 16 within the head 2 to the mandrel is facilitated. In effect, therefore, the feed of members 16 through the head 2 and into the hose is a gravity feed.
The members 16 are fed to the inclined head 2 from a storage hopper 3 located at a level above the level of the head 2. Members 16 fall from the hopper 3 into a position selector 4 from which they pass to a vibratory feeder 5 actuated by automatic level sensors.
The vibratory feeder 5 is actuated by a motor 6 and includes a cylindrical container which is located on a plane intermediate the planes of the hopper 3 and head 2. Within the cylindrical container are a number of internal channels through which members 16 can pass as a result of the vibration of the feeder 5, to the exit of the feeder 5. The channels of the feeder along which the members 16 pass as a result of vibration are an ascending order of channels terminating in the outlet or exit of the vibratory feeder 5. The outlet of the vibratory feeder 5 is linked by means of a further channel with the inlet of the inclined head 2. Thus the rate at which members 16 are supplied to the head 2 by the vibratory feeder 5 determines, for a given speed of extrusion, the spacing of the members 16 along the length of the extruded hose. The rate of feed of the feeder 5 is determined by the speed of operation of the motor 6 which in turn is controlled by a potentiometer.
The extrusion machine 1 also includes a hopper 7 containing the plastics material ultimately to be extruded from the die of the extrusion machine.
The hose or tube 17 issuing from the die of the extrusion machine 1 contains the members 16 spaced along its length. The hose 17 is led from the die of the machine 1 beneath guide rollers 9 in a water bath 8. The water bath 8 effects a pre-cooling of the hose 17 and at the same time the guide rollers 9 effect a straightening operation on the hose to straighten the hose sufficiently to pass subsequently into a chamber 10 wherein the hose passes through a number of hoops or rings while at the same time being subject externally to reduced pressure. The passage of the hose 17 through the hoops or rings while being subject to reduced pressure effects an external sizing operation on the tube, and subsequent to the passage through the hoops or rings the hose 17 passes through a further cooling bath 11 wherein the cooling of the hose is completed.
After issuing from the bath 11 the hose 17 passes through a cutter station 12 which includes a guide and a pair of circular disc cutters between which the hose passes. A hauling arrangement 13 draws the hose 17 through the extrusion plant from the extrusion machine 11, and feeds it through a guillotine 14 to a reeler or coiler wherein predetermined lengths of hose 17 are wound onto reels, or into coils.
With particular reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it can be seen that the grip outlet members 16 are each in the form of a tube housed within the hose 17. Thus water or other liquid flowing along the hose 17 can flow through each of the members 16 so that the liquid in the hose will be present at each of the members 16 along the length of the hose. Along at least two thirds of the exterior surface of each of the members 16 is a helical screw-thread 18 comprising three thread sections. Thus for example, a section of left-hand thread may be interposed between two sections of right-hand thread, or alternatively a section of right-hand thread may be interposed between two sections of left-hand thread. It will be appreciated that the crest of the thread is in contact with the inner surface of the hose 17, and thus the groove of the thread defines a helical passage of somewhat complex form owing to the three different thread sections. Liquid from the hose 17 can enter the passage 19 defined by the thread by way of apertures (not shown) which place the one end of the passage 19 in communication with the interior of the hose 17. At the opposite end of the passage 19 the member 16 and hose 17 define between them an annular decompression chamber 20.
At the far side of the chamber 20 from the thread 18 the member 16 includes a pair of diametrically opposed projections each divided into a pair of lugs 22 by a central groove 21.
The grooves 21 both communicate with the decompression chamber 20 and thus it will be recognised that liquid from the hose 17 can flow along the whole length of the passage 19, into the decompression chamber 20, and can enter the grooves 21 from the chamber 20.
It will be recalled that the cutter station 12 incorporates a guide and a pair of circular disc cutters between which the hose passes. It will further be recognised that the projections 22 of the member 16 give rise to diametrically opposed protruberances on the outer surface of the hose 17. The guide of the cutter station 22 aligns the hose passing through the cutter station such that the tops of the protruberances are cut away by the circular disc cutters. Thus the circular disc cutters produce, for each of the members 16, a pair of diametrically opposed apertures in the wall of the hose 17, said diametrically opposed apertures revealing the grooves 21. Thus liquid from the hose 17 reaching the grooves 21 from the chamber 20 of each member 16 can drip from the hose to produce the drip irrigation effect. It will be recognised that the volume of liquid leaving the hose at each of the members 16 is determined by the liquid pressure within the hose, and by the pressure reduction effect of the passage 19, decompression chamber 20 and grooves 21, together with the size of the apertures formed in the hose.
As will be recognised the size of the apertures determines the area of the groove 21 exposed.
The separation of the thread 18 and thus the passage 19 into three sections of differing thread direction not only achieves a significant pressure drop along the length of the passage 19, but also induces turbulence in the flow of liquid along the passage 19 which prevents sedimentation in the passage 19, it being recognised that sedimentation blocking the flow path is a problem found with certain previously proposed drip irrigation devices.
It will be recognised that the external shape of the members 16 is such that immediately a member 16 appears at the exit of the mandrel of the inclined head 2 of the extruder then it is in effect gripped by the plastics material being extruded to form the hose, and that material will conform to the outer shape of the member 16. The material does not conform sufficiently closely to block the passage 19, but does conform sufficiently closely to follow the projection 22. The circular cutters which produce the apertures in the hose 17 corresponding to the projections 22 can be in the form of milling cutters located on either side of the hose and at right angles to the axis of the hose.
