Description
SPECIFICATION
Drain structure for an automotive vehicle
The present invention relates to a drain stucture for a vehicle body having a sun roof which can be opened if desired.
In such a vehicle body, water penetrating round the edges of the sun roof is usually collected in a groove in a frame of the sun roof and drained through a drain pipe. Conventionally, as shown in
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, a drain pipe 1 is connected at its upper end to a drain groove 3 formed in a frame 2 of a sun roof and at its lower end to a hole 5 formed in a rear floor 4a of the vehicle body 4 through a grommet 6. The hole 5 is of course required to be formed only in vehicle bodies that have a sun roof frame 2. Thus, before forming the hole 5 it is necessary to check whether or not the vehicle body 4 has the sun roof frame 2. An alternative would be to form the hole 5 in all types of the vehicle body 4 regardless of whether or not the sun roof frame 2 is present.A plug or the like would then have to be fitted into the hole 5 on vehicle bodies 4 without a sun roof in order to prevent water from entering the vehicle body through the unused hole.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a drain structure for an automotive vehicle with a sun roof in which it is not necessary to form a hole to be connected with the lower end of a drain pipe for the purpose of draining water that is collected by a groove in the frame of the sun roof.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a drain structure for an automotive vehicle in which no special members are provided to attach to the vehicle body a drain pipe connected with a drain groove of a sun roof frame.
According to the present invention, a drain structure for an automotive vehicle includes a drain pipe connecting a drain groove formed in a sun roof frame with means for discharging air from within the vehicle body for the purpose of ventilation. The drain groove is formed in a conventional manner two collect water, for example, rain water, that leaks through a sealing mechanism between a sun roof panel and the sun roof frame. It is preferable that the discharging means include a draught bracket having a flange portion at its peripheral edge and a vertically extending recessed central portion so as to form a clearance or space to guide the water dropping down from the lower end of the drain pipe into the space. The discharging means preferably also has an outlet so formed in a rear wing of the vehicle body that the water can be drained through the outlet.
The invention also provided a motor vehicle having a frame for a sunshine roof and a drain structure according to the invention.
One form of drain structure according to the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to Figures 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a partial schematic sectional view of a vehicle body showing a conventional drain structure for an automotive vehicle with a sun roof;
Figure 2 is a side view, partly in section, of part of a vehicle body showing the drain structure according to the present invention; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view showing a part of the drain structure shown in Figure 2.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings, a drain groove 8 is formed in the frame 9 of a sun roof in a conventional manner so as to collect water, such as rain, that penetrates between the sun roof panel and the frame. An outlet 10 is formed in a rear wing 12 of the vehicle body 11 through which air from within a passengercompart ment 13 of the vehicle body can be discharged into the atmosphere. A draught-preventing bracket 14 is fixed onto the inside of the rear wing 12. The draught bracket 14 includes at its peripheral edge a U-shaped flange portion 15 to be fitted to the inside of the rear wing 12 and at its central portion a recessed portion 16 protruding inwardly to form a clearance or space 17 between the recessed portion of the bracket and the rear wing.The top portion of the space 17 communicates with the passenger compartment 13.
Also, the space 17 is connected at its bottom with the outlet 10. The combination of the outlet 10 and the space 17 constitutes a ventilation opening or draught hole indicated generally by the reference numeral 18. As shown in Figure 2, a drain pipe 19 has an upper end portion which is fixed to one end of a connecting pipe 20. The other end of the connecting pipe 20 is fixedly inserted into a side portion of the drain groove 8 so that the water can flow from the drain groove 8 into the connecting pipe 20. The intermediate portion of the drain pipe 19 passes through a space between the inner and outer walls of the vehicle body 11.
In operation, water such as rain water is collected by the drain groove 8 formed in the sun roof frame 9 when it leaks through a sealing mechanism (not shown) round the sun roof panel (not shown). The water collected in the groove 8 flows through the connecting pipe 20 and the drain pipe 19 into the space 17 of the draught hole 18 so as to be drained through the outlet 10.
In accordance with the present invention, no special hole is formed in a rear floor of the vehicle body for the purpose of draining the water received in the grooove of the sun roof frame. Therefore, it is possible to omit the steps of checking whether or not a vehicle body has a sun roof frame and forming a special hole, or fitting a plug into a hole in a vehicle body having no sun roof frame.
1. A drain structure for an automotive vehicle having a sun roof which can be partly opened if desired, comprising: a drain groove formed in a frame of the sun roof for collecting water; means provided at a side of the vehicle body for discharging air from within the vehicle body for the purpose of ventilation; and a drain pipe connected at its upper end to the drain groove and at its lower end to the discharging means and so arranged that water collected by the drain groove can flowthroughthe drain pipe into the discharging means so as to be
