Description
SPECIFICATION
Electrical device and support
This invention relates to the combination of an electrical device such as a tilt responsive switch and a support for supporting the device.
According to the invention, there is provided the combination of an electrical device and a support for supporting the device on a base, the support including a plate carrying the device, and first, second and third mounting means for mounting the plate to the base, said second and third mounting means being resilient and adjustable and being located so as to form a substantially right angle triangle with respect to the first mounting means with said first mounting means common to the perpendicular sides of the triangle.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combination of a tilt responsive switch and support according to the present invention,
Figure 2 is a side view of the combination together with a cross section of the tilt switch shown in Fig. 1; and
Figure 3 is a top view of the combination shown in Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings, the combination 10 includes an electrical device, in this embodiment a tilt responsive switch 11, the device being supported on a base 1 2. The combination comprises a top plate 1 3 providing a mounting surface and a bottom plate 1 4. Bottom plate 1 4 has suitable holes through which corresponding threaded studs 1 6A to 1 6C are inserted and held in place by any suitable means such as welding. Bottom plate 1 4 is suitably fastened to base 12, such as by welding, and becomes a part of base 1 2 after such installation. Springs 1 7A to 1 7C are inserted over corresponding studs 1 6A to 16C.Washers 1 9A to 1 9C are then inserted over the corresponding studs and mounting plate 1 3 is next inserted over the three studs so that the studs 1 6A to 16C extend freely through the corresponding apertures of top plate 1 3. Finally, adjustable locking nuts 20A to 20C are threaded onto the threaded portions of corresponding studs 1 6A to 16C.
The tilt switch is affixed by any suitable means, such as by welding, to the mounting surface of top plate 1 3. Tilt switch 11 comprises cylindrical housing 30 attached at one end to top plate 1 3. As can be seen from Fig.
2, the interior of housing 30 comprises an inner circumference having two different diameters, one at 31 and a second at 32. The ridge 33 at the dividing point between diameter 31 and diameter 32 forms a support for printed circuit board 34. The top of housing 30 is filled with an electrically insulating resin 35.
Printed circuit board 34 supports a pendulum 36 attached to ball 37 resting on top of printed circuit board 34 and suspended therefrom by wire 38. A number of electrical leads exit from resin 35. One lead is a ground wire 40 terminating at screw 41 which may be a self-tapping screw inserted into an aperture (not shown) in top plate 1 3. Two other wires 42 and 43 extend also to printed circuit board 34.
Printed circuit board 34 may simply comprise a circular ring of copper connected to ball 37 but insulated from housing 30. Lead 42 is connected to this copper ring for supplying power thereto. Lead 43 is attached to housing 30 so that as the tilt switch is tilted, pendulum 36 comes into contact with housing 30 to form an electrical circuit from wire 42, to ball 37, through wire 38, pendulum 36, housing 30 and then through lead 43.
The other end of lead 43 is then connected to any suitable load such as a warning device. In the alternative, printed circuit board 34 may contain an amplifier for amplifying the signal resulting from contact of pendulum 36 with housing 30. The portion of housing 30 below ridge 33 may be filled with a silicon oil for damping movement of pendulum 36 so that tilt switch 11 will not be responsive to vibrations.
Thus, studs 1 6A to 16C, springs 1 7A to 17C and nuts 20A to 20C form resilient and adjustable mounting means. It can be seen that mounting means B needs to be neither resilient nor adjustable as long as some pivotal movement of top plate or mounting surface 1 3 is allowed around stud 16B.
After installation of the combination, top plate 1 3 may be adjusted to assume a level attitude. First, nut 20A is rotated clockwise forcing its associated corner of plate 1 3 down towards base 1 4 until tilt switch 11 operates whatever warning device to which it is connected. Next, nut 20A is rotated in the counterclockwise direction and the revolutions are counted until tilt switch 11 operates in the opposite direction. The number of revolutions is then halved and nut 20A is rotated to its midpoint position. Subsequently, the same operation is performed by adjusting nut 20C.
In this manner, when the combination is in a true level orientation, pendulum 36 should be everwhere equidistant from housing 30. It is advantageous for studs 1 6A to 16C to form a right triangle so that the adjustment axis through points A and B while nut 20C is being adjusted is independent of the axis through points B and C while nut 20A is being adjusted. Another important feature of the combination is that it allows a simple push to test operation by simply pushing down on any one of the corners of plate 1 3 until tilt switch 11 operates. If tilt switch 11 fails to operate, the operator immediately becomes aware that the device needs servicing.
