Abstract

205,266. Potter, T., Fielding, F., Fielding, J. T., and Potter, T. Aug. 14. 1922. Spindle apparatus; building-motions; antiballooning arrangements.-Relates to means for enabling yarn to be spun or doubled upon the bare spindle in ring spinning or doubling frames, travellers of the usual bow formation being employed and the yarn guides being dispensed with. A ring 5 is mounted on the ring rail to control the yarn and to reduce friction between the ring and traveller; the ring rail is operated by a cam 6 so that it rises at a gradually increasing speed, which is suddenly increased at the nose of the cop, and falls at a high speed which diminishes after the rail has fallen a short distance but is at all times higher than the rising speed; the spindles are inclined towards or away from the rollers; and a wire 15 is provided on the ring rail to prevent the yarn coils slipping off the spindle. The apex 12 of the cam is set back and a projection 13 on the descending side serves to break the fall of the ring rail. The cam runs at a greater speed than is usual for spinning on bobbins. The rings 5 are preferably such as described in Specification 138,432, and assist the cam in obtaining a binding of the yarn at the nose of the cop. The wires 15, which are mounted in brackets 16 to allow of their being moved back to facilitate doffing, check ballooning and thereby prevent the yarn from being thrown off the spindle. The spindles are preferably formed with two parallel portions a, b, and intervening tapered portions c, d, e, and may be used either for weft or twist cops. When the cop is completed it is slipped upwards and the yarn wound on the exposed base of the spindle. When the invention is applied to an existing machine, a rotary lift is preferably used in place of the lever lift. Any suitable knocking-off motion may be used to stop the machine when the set of cops is completed.
