Damping-appliances, hand.-Relates to presscopying devices of the folding type adapted to receive and maintain in a moistened condition a number of copying cloths and to be subjected to pressure in a copying-press so as to distribute the moisture through the cloths. Two shallow trays a are provided each containing a permanent filling c of a water absorbent substance, preferably a mixture of asbestos and charcoal, the latter being employed for its antiseptic properties. The mixture may be compressed into a solid pad of the required shape and thickness so as to allow of its replacement. The trays are formed from a sheet of non-corrodible metal such as galvanized iron, the edges being bent over wires b or flat strips of metal and then soldered. The outer surfaces of the trays are covered with canvas &c., the part e of the covering between the trays forming a hinge. The absorbent substance is retained in position by a piece of absorbent cloth f stitched to the canvas at its edges or attached to the trays. Alternatively, a sheet of perforated zinc may be attached to the outer covering or soldered or cemented, to the edges of the tray.
