Screws, assembling, screwing up, and unscrewing. - A device for'aligning pipes about to be connected comprises a sleeve which is provided with radial screws fitted to the lower part of the sleeve for centering and securing one of the pipe ends and adjustable rollers mounted in the upper part of the sleeve to hold and align the other pipe end. Preferablv the sleeve is divided longitudinally into two halves hinged together and having clamping screws and wing nuts as indicated in the Figure. In operation a pipe B with a screw socket C is secured by a bolt 25 in a firmly supported collar 24 and the sleeve placed round the socket by means of handles 12. By tightening the lower graduated nut 10 the socket is gripped by the radial screws 23 which may be re-adjusted in the event of the outer circumference of the pipe not being uniform. Graduations 27 enable the readjustments to be effected uniformly. The pipe A having been lowered the upper nut 10 is turned the same amount as the lower nut 10 when the rollers 16 should support the pipe and allow it to be turned without undue friction. In order to allow for irregularities the pins 19 about which the rollers revolve are provided with eccentric portions controlled by the notched screw heads 20. Spring catches 21 retain the latter in their adjusted positions.
