Abstract

The cab (2) has a superposed, streamlined canopy element (4) which provides additional space (V) above the cab and is accessible through an aperture (10) in the cab roof (3). The canopy element (4) comprises a portion (5) which is fixed to the cab (2), and a slidable portion (6) which is housed within the fixed portion (5) so as to be displaceable for extension in the forward direction by means of a jack (9). The sliding portion (6) has an entry aperture (7) in its floor to correspond with the aperture (10) in the cab roof (3). The fixed portion (5) is provided with a folding bed (12). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improved cab for a commerical vehicle The present invention relates to a cab for commercial vehicles, such as trucks, and has the object of providing a cab which has better aerodynamic characteristics and more crew space than known cabs.
According to the present invention there is provided a cab for a commercial motor vehicle, characterised in that the cab is provided a superposed canopy element which has a streamlined profile and defines an additional space above the cab roof, the canopy element including a fixed portion which is fixed to the cab, and a slidable portion which is slidable relative to the fixed portion so as to be displaceable between a retracted position, when the profile of said sliding portion constitutes the streamlining of the canopy element, and an extended position, when the additional space defined by the canopy element is enlarged, said cab being provided with means for displacing said sliding portion, and means allowing entry to the canopy element.
One embodiment of the invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a truck provided with a cab according to the present invention; Figures 2 and 3 are longitudinal crosssections taken along the line ll-ll of Fig. 1, showing the cab in two different positions of use, and Figure 4 is a transverse section taken along the line IV-IV of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a truck generally indicated 1, including a cab 2 which has a roof 3 (Figs. 2 to 4) with a superposed canopy element 4. This canopy element 4 has a streamlined profile to improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the cab 2, and thus reduce the drag of the truck 1 itself.
The canopy element 4 comprises a fixed portion 5 which is fixed to, and in this case is integral with, the structure of the cabin 2 and has two side walls 5a, which are interconnected by a transverse roof portion Sb and a frontal element Sc in abutment with the cab roof 3, and a rear wall 5d(see Figs. 2 and 3).
A sliding portion 6 is housed within the fixed portion 5 of the canopy element 4, so as to be slidable telescopically in the forward direction between a retracted position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and an extended position, as shown in Fig. 3. The sliding portion 6 has two side walls 6a, a roof element 6b, which provides the streamlined profile of the canopy element 4, when the sliding portion 6 is situated in the retracted position, and a floor element 6c(see Figs. 2 to 4) which lies immediately above the cab roof 3. The floor element 6c is provided with an aperture 7 which allows access to the interior of the canopy element 4.
The sliding portion 6 slides within the fixed portion 5 on longitudinally-extending guides 8 (Fig. 4) and the sliding displacement is controlled by a hydraulic or pnemuatic jack 9. It will be appreciated, however, that any suitable mechanically-, hydraulically-, electrically-operated device could be used to displace the sliding portion 6 between its retracted and extended positions.
The roof 3 of the cab 2 is provided with an aperture 10 to allow access to the interior of the canopy element 4 when the aperture 7 in the floor 6c of the sliding portion 6 is fully or partially in register with the aperture 1 0.
When the sliding portion 6 is retracted, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the floor 6e partially covers the aperture 10, but it is possible to enter the canopy element 4 through the uncovered part of the aperture 10. When the sliding portion 6 is extended, as shown in Fig.
3, the floor 6c uncovers the whole of the aperture 10, so that entry to the canopy element 4 is greatly facilitated.
A folding bed 1 2 of a known type is fixed to the rear wall 5dof the fixed portion 5, so that, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in its lowered position (defined by stop means not sho',' n) the bed 1 2 partially covers the aperture 10 O in the cab roof 3. The sliding portion 6 is provided with a second bed 1 3 which rests on the floor 6c.
A window 14 is provided at the front of the roof 6b of the sliding portion 6.
When the truck 1 is in motion, the sliding portion 6 is retracted, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this position the canopy element 4 defines an additional space V which is separate from the working space in the cab 2 and represents an increase in the space available to the occupants of the cab 2. It is possible to enter canopy element 4 through the aperture 10 after raising the folding bed 12, and subsequently to use the folding bed 12, after lowering it (as shown in broken outline in Fig.
2 and continuous out line in Fig. 3).
When the truck 1 is parked, the jack 9 may be operated to displace the sliding portion 6 into its extended position, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby increasing the space V available inside the canopy element 4 so that the whole of the roof aperture 10 may be used to enter the canopy element. This is particularly advantageous if the folding bed 1 2 is already occupied, since a second person may enter canopy element 4 through the unblocked part of the aperture 10 and use the second bed 1 3 without disturbing the occupant of the folding bed 12.
The berths for the crew of a truck are usually situated behind the seats, however, the use of a canopy element as described leaves the space behind the seats available for other purposes, such as, for example a shower cubicle, a kitchen or storage cupboards.

Claims (6)

1. A commercial vehicle cab, in which the cab is provided a superposed canopy element which has a streamlined profile and defines an additional space above the cab roof, the canopy element including a fixed portion which is fixed to the cab, and a slidable portion which is slidable relative to the fixed portion so as to be displaceable between a retracted position, when the profile of said sliding portion constitutes the streamlining of the canopy element, and an extended position, when the additional space defined by the canopy element is enlarged, said cab being provided with means for displacing said sliding portion, and means allowing entry to the canopy element.
2. A commercial vehicle cab as claimed in Claim 1, in which the cab roof and the canopy element are provided with respective corresponding apertures which comprise the means allowing entry to the canopy element.
3. A commercial vehicle cab as claimed in Claim 2, in which the cab roof forms the floor of the fixed portion of the canopy element, and in which the sliding portion has a floor element which is located immediately above the roof of the cab and is provided with a said aperture allowing access to the canopy element from the aperture in the cab roof.
4. A commercial vehicle as claimed in Claim 3, in which the aperture in the roof of the cab is positioned in such a way that, when the sliding portion is retracted, the aperture is partially covered by the floor of said sliding portion, and when the sliding portion is extended the aperture is completely uncovered.
5. A commercial vehicle cab as claimed in Claim 4, in which the canopy element is provided with a folding bed which is supported by the fixed part in such a way that, when the bed is lowered it partially covers the aperture in the cab roof, entry into the canopy element being possible through the part of the aperture not covered by the bed, when the sliding portion is extended, and in which a second bed is provided which rests on the floor element of said sliding portion.
6. A commercial vehicle cab substantially as herein described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
