Abstract
203,837. Irving, W. June 11, 1922. Beat-up motions.-The weft is moved forwardly by an intermittently rotated toothed barrel and finally beaten up by an oscillating comb. The barrel 16, Fig. 1, with flexible needles C, C<1>, is rotated from a crank 7 by mutilated gearing, the needles passing through slots in the stay board 2 and then carrying the weft forwardly to the comb 14. The comb, oscillated from the crank 7 through link-work 8, 10 then engages the weft and completes the beat-up. The slotted connecting-rod 8 works on an antifriction bowl 9. The comb-carrying shaft 12 may extend from side to side of the loom or pivot pins may be used in which case the parts 8 - - 12 are mounted on each side. The comb or half reed is clamped in parts 13. The ordinary reed 3 is stationary and the comb 14 is preferably constructed similarly to it, by inserting the blades between two wooden trays and winding prepared threads round them to give the same " set " to both comb and reed. An alternative method of intermittently rotating the barrel is shown in Figs. 4 and 6 in which a chain 22 when pulled by the rod 10. rotates in a hub 23 which is loose on the shaft 15 but is in toothed engagement with a spring-pressed hub 24 splined to the shaft. An adjusting hub 26, Fig. 5, with flattened sides to abut intermittently against a fixed spring-pressed stop piece 27 is also fixed on the shaft. In operation, after the chain has partly rotated the barrel 16 and shaft 15 and is released, the recoil of a spring 29 rotates the hub 24 back to its initial position, in which it is retained by the action of the star-piece 27. The amount of rotation of the barrel at each stroke is varied by adjusting a pin d<1>. Shuttles.-The Provisional Specification states that the shuttle used has an extension on its side through which the weft passes to lay the weft very near the fell of the cloth.
