Abstract

Weft, 29, Fig. 1, extending from a bobbin 51 through an open clamp 32, 38 and an eyelet 48 to the edge of the fabric is pulled down by a hook 28 so that a vertical stretch is. formed for engagement by a forked weft inserting needle 30. When the needle has taken a loop partway through the shed, the clamp 32, 38 closes and a cutter 21, 22 operating between the main warp 23 and auxiliary warp threads 24 cuts the weft attached to the fabric the loop of weft is then taken by a hooked needle 79 and straightened out into a single pick. The cutter consists of a blade 22 having a notch 74 formed with a cutting edge 75, and a blade 21 formed with a cutting edge 76 the blades are coupled together by a torsion spring which tends to keep them in the relative positions shown. The blade 21 is fixed on a shaft 18 which can be turned by a cam-operated rack 9 and pinion 15 to swing the blades down so that the notch 74 receives the weft as it is taken into the shed. At this stage, a tail 80 on the blade 22 encounters a stop 81, whereupon continued movement of the blade 21 ends the weft. The blades are swung clear of the reed at beat-up by a spring 60 acting on a lever 56 pressing the rack 9 against its cam 5.
