Abstract

Reinforced doors or windows for security purposes comprise a concealed metal insert (12) secured inside the door or window frame (10) and to the surrounding wall structure, the metal insert (12) also covering a lock keep and door or window hinges, the door or window per se also being provided with reinforcing means (15), e.g. a concealed metal plate or armoured or Georgian glass. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Door and Window Reinforcing Security Means The present invention concerns means for reinforcing doors and window frames for security purposes.
It is becoming increasingly noticeable that even though break-ins might occur through windows or fan lights, it is necessary for the door or ground floor window to be destroyed for easy removal of the goods to be purloined. Even though most doors and ground floor windows on expensive homes, lock-up shops, warehouses etc.
are provided with costly locks the doors or windows themselves can be easily destroyed by a determined felon with an axe, jemmy, crow-bar or the like in a remarkably short space of time.
An object of the present invention is to provide reinforcing means for doors, frames and windows, making destruction thereof difficult or practically impossible.
According to the present invention a reinforcing means for doors or windows and their associated frames comprises a concealed metal insert secured inside the frame itself and also adapted to be secured to the surrounding opening, the metal insert also covering the lock keep and the door or window hinges, the door or window per se also being provided with reinforcing means. In the case of a wooden door or the like, it is preferable to use a full sheet of metal inside two covering panels so that the presence of the metal sheet is not only undetectable but the door is aesthetically pleasing. In the case of a window, armour plated glass or Georgian wire glass could be used.
Angle iron or a T-section member has been found suitable for reinforcing the frame; it can be positioned such that one flange rests on the outside of the frame and the other flange or web of the T is slotted into the frame at right angles thereto. If the door or window is inwardly opening it will be necessary to provide a metal housing for the lock keep firmly secured by welding or the like, to the flange of the angle iron inserted in the frame. If the door or window is outwardly opening the flange resting on the outside of the frame will cover the keep. The hinges should be of the invisible type so that the flange inserted in the frame will cover them.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:~ Fig. 1 is a fragmentary section through an outwardly opening door and frame positioned in a wall opening: and Fig. 2 is a similar section relating to an inwardly opening door.
Each main timber member 10 of a door frame is longitudinally slotted at 11 to accommodate one flange 1 2a or an angle iron 12. The other flange 1 2b of the angle iron is rebated into the timber, as shown, so as to lie flush with the outer surface thereof. The angle irons 12 are mitred at the corresponding corners in the same way as the frame members 10. Apertures 13 are provided in the flanges 1 2b of the angle irons 12 in positions corresponding to apertures in the frame members 10. A door 14 is hung on invisible hinges (not shown) rebated into the frame 10 and covered by the flange 1 2a in both embodiments shown. A metal insert 15, provided over substantially the whole surface of the door, is covered by a decorative panel 16. In each embodiment the door lock (not shown) is positioned behind the outside surface of the door rearwardly of the metal plate 15.The frame is secured in position in the opening by means of rawlbolts 17.
